US tech giant Apple is expected to launch its hotly-anticipated next generation iPhone during a special event on September 10, according to a report by technology blog AllThingsD.

Rumours of the next generation iPhone have been circulating online for the last few months now, and new features expected include fingerprint sensors and a redesign of the icons backed by the new iOS7.

Apple launched the much-hyped iPhone 5 in September 2012, and later announced that it sold five million units during opening weekend alone.

Reports suggest that along with the new iPhone 5S, Apple will also be releasing a cheaper version of its flagship phone (with a plastic casing) as it struggles to compete with popular Android phone manufacturers such as Samsung.

A recent report indicated that Korean company Samsung even beat Apple to become the world’s most profitable phonemaker in the second quarter of the year, boosted by sales of its flagship Galaxy S4.

The arrival of the new iPhone will be keenly watched by industry experts and consumers, and as Gulf Business wrote earlier, may help the tech company re-establish its leadership in the smartphone market.
