UAE’s ADNOC Group said on Thursday that it will start production at the Ras Al Sadr gas field in Abu Dhabi, 75 years after the first exploration well was drilled at the field.

The gas field is set to produce up to 100 million standard cubic feet per day, equivalent to Sweden’s daily gas needs.

The state energy firm said production at the Ras Al Sadr will ramp up to full capacity by 2026, further supporting the UAE’s gas self-sufficiency and contributing to the growing global demand for gas.

The field is being developed jointly by ADNOC and INPEX/JODCO, a subsidiary of one of Japan’s largest oil and gas exploration and production companies, INPEX.

Ras Al Sadr is the second field discovered across the block, underlining the attractiveness of Abu Dhabi’s world-class oil and gas resources.

“This achievement underscores our contribution to the prosperity and sustainability of the country and reaffirms our commitment to operate in harmony with local communities to create lasting and sustainable value for the nation,” said Abdulmunim Saif Al Kindy, ADNOC Upstream executive director.

Though the well at Ras Al Sadr was “dry” when it was drilled in the 1950s and Abu Dhabi’s first commercial discovery came from another field, the field is essentially where the oil and gas industry of the emirate started.

Meanwhile, ADNOC said earlier in May that its oil production capacity has reached 4.85 million barrels per day (bpd), up from the 4.65 million bpd it reported at the end of 2023. The UAE has plans to raise its production capacity to 5 million bpd by 2027.
