The move aligns with Abu Dhabi’s goal to become a public transport green zone by 2030. The new service, which launched on September 12, features buses powered by clean hydrogen and electric energy The Green Bus service will initially operate on Route 65, connecting Marina Mall with Shams Boutik on Al Reem Island. This launch is part of the Green Bus Programme, which is part of a broader effort to transform Abu Dhabi Island’s public transport infrastructure. The programme is a comprehensive initiative designed to assess and integrate advanced hydrogen and electric technologies into the emirate’s public transport network. The programme involves collaboration with international government agencies and bus manufacturers to identify and implement the most suitable green technologies for Abu Dhabi’s specific environmental needs. Green Bus programme includes specialised training In addition to the deployment of green buses, the programme includes a focus on enhancing Emirati skills and expertise. Specialised training programmes in hydrogen and electric bus technology are being provided, with practical training opportunities in South Korea and China. The assessment phase, which began in November 2023, is scheduled to conclude in June next year. During this period, bus operators and drivers will undergo both theoretical and practical training, while certified technicians will receive ongoing education to ensure effective maintenance and inspections of the green buses. As part of the Green Bus Programme, Abu Dhabi Mobility will also evaluate the performance of the new buses and establish support facilities to ensure optimal operation. The transition from diesel to renewable energy is expected to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions, with an anticipated decrease of over 100,000 metric tonnes annually in Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi Mobility’s Green Bus Programme is poised to set a benchmark for sustainable public transport solutions, reinforcing the emirate’s dedication to environmental stewardship and enhancing the quality of life for its residents and visitors.
