The Abu Dhabi Business Centre at the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED) has expanded its ‘Freelancer Licence’ offering, adding 30 new activities, bringing the total to 100.

This move is aimed at boosting entrepreneurship by allowing UAE nationals and residents to explore a broader spectrum of business opportunities, further fostering Abu Dhabi’s supportive economic environment.

The licence has become a key tool in leveraging the expertise of professionals across various sectors, enabling them to offer specialised services to organisations, companies and individuals.

Last year, ADDED issued 1,013 freelancer licences, reflecting growing interest from individuals seeking to establish and operate their businesses.

The new activities encompass cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence (AI) development, electronic equipment and devices systems and software design, oil and natural gas fields production software design, and data classification and analysis services. The expansion also includes development and innovation in computer systems and programmes, production models by 3D imaging, and online players support service providers, among others.

These additions align with Abu Dhabi’s ongoing efforts to diversify its economy and accelerate its transition towards a knowledge-based and innovation-driven economy.

The licence now covers a wide range of activities, supporting modern labour market trends and evolving business operations.

Freelancer visa expansion part of strategy to encourage entrepreneurs

Mohammed Munif Al Mansouri, executive director of ADBC, emphasised the significance of the expansion: “In line with our commitment to keeping pace with the latest developments and changes in the local and global economic landscape, ADDED is dedicated to providing all necessary services for various commercial and economic activities. This step reflects our eagerness to expand the range of business activities available to entrepreneurs in Abu Dhabi while responding to freelancers’ aspirations, thus enhancing their effective contribution to cementing a strong, resilient, and diversified economy.”

He added, “Over the past year, the freelancer licence has witnessed a surge in interest from individuals seeking to establish and operate their businesses. We remain committed to continuing our efforts to provide a supportive and vibrant environment for innovation, solidifying Abu Dhabi’s position as a preferred destination for talents, businesses, and investments.”

To obtain the licence, applicants must demonstrate experience in a specific field or industry or have earned academic or professional credentials in that area.

ADDED has established a regulatory framework, work regulations, and general requirements to guide the issuance and operation of the freelancer licence.
