Abu Dhabi airport to launch new cargo terminal project

The phased strategy also includes a dedicated pharmaceutical handling facility by end of Q3 2020

Abu Dhabi Airports and Etihad Cargo have announced their intent to implement a multi-phased development project to revamp Abu Dhabi International Airport’s cargo infrastructure.

The cargo infrastructure development strategy will begin with the immediate upgrade of Etihad’s existing air cargo terminal facilities on the southside airport boundary, due for a phased completion between fall 2019 and end of Q3 2020, a statement said.

This phase will grow the productivity of the existing facilities to sustain air cargo growth for half a decade. It will also bolster Etihad’s pharmaceutical logistics capability through a designated southside pharma terminal, increasing 3,500 sqm of space for temperature-controlled handling and storage.

The strategy will conclude with the launch of a new air cargo terminal in the east midfield section of the airport, earmarked for future integrated cargo, logistics and integrator activities, the statement said.

Etihad Cargo is the cargo and logistics services arm of the Etihad Aviation Group.

Tony Douglas, group CEO, Etihad Aviation group, said: “The immediate investment in the southside terminal will deliver a step change in the efficiency and capability of our existing facilities while the announcement of the development of a new facility reinforces Etihad’s commitment to develop Abu Dhabi as a world class hub for the logistics of the future.”

Abu Dhabi Airports is a public joint-stock company wholly owned by the Abu Dhabi government.
