Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced that it has awarded two construction contracts worth Dhs38 million to build internal roads in the emirate.

The two projects represent the first phase of Dubai’s Dhs1 billion five-year plan (2012-2016), which aims to pave internal roads in several residential districts in the city, reported official news agency WAM, quoting Mattar Al Tayer, RTA’s chairman and executive director.

The first project at Al Qusais 3 includes the construction of a six km road with streetlights and parking slots for some mosques and public schools. Work on the Dhs23 million project is set to start in June this year and is expected to be completed in about nine months.

The second project at Al Qouz 4 includes the construction of an eight km road, and a storm-water drainage service, at a cost of Dhs15 million. The project is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2013.

Earlier this month, the RTA also awarded a contract for constructing internal roads at Al Warqaa 1, 2, 3 and 4 at a cost of about Dhs156.631 million, said Al Tayer.

“The project includes construction and lighting works of roads stretching 125 km; the construction of 89 km-long roads, and improvements on existing roads extending 36km,” he added.

Dubai’s five-year plan will be implemented in five phases, and will cover about 16 areas where urbanisation rates range from 20 to 80 per cent, said the report.
