Kuwait Airways Firms Up $3.3bn Boeing Order

Kuwait Airways and aircraft manufacturer Boeing have finalised an order for 10 widebody 777-300ER planes, a joint statement revealed.

The deal, which was originally announced in November, has a value of $3.3 billion at list prices.

The 777-300ER is an “Extended Range” version of the 777 with seating for up to 386 passengers and a range of 7,825 nautical miles (14,490 kilometres).

“This order marks another feather in the cap for the 777-300ER which not only continues to be an integral part of the fleet of many of the world’s airlines but is also being ordered by new customers who see the value of the airplane,” said Ray Conner, president and CEO, Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

“The aerospace industry in the Middle East continues to enjoy a phenomenal growth and we are proud to be part of that growth and look forward to an enduring relationship with Kuwait Airways.”

The new order is expected to help the loss-making national carrier of Kuwait expand its operations through the launch of new routes.

“Kuwait Airways has plans to renew its fleet as well as expand its operations and the 777-300ER is a perfect airplane for our strategy,” said Rasha Al Roumi, Kuwait Airways CEO.

“The airplane has already validated its position in terms of high reliability, low operating costs and fuel efficiency. We are looking forward to having the 777-300ER join our fleet.”

In a previous statement, Al Roumi said that Kuwait Airways will begin taking delivery of these aircraft from November 2016.

Kuwait Airways also inked a massive deal with Airbus in February 2013 to purchase 25 new aircraft including Airbus A320neos and A350s, and lease another 12. The airline is expected to take delivery of these planes between 2019 and 2022.
