Policeman Killed In “Terrorist” Attack In Bahrain – Interior Ministry

A policeman was killed in a “terrorist” incident while on duty southwest of Bahrain’s capital Manama on Monday, the Interior Ministry said.

Police were investigating the attack in an area called Damistan, the ministry said in a statement posted on its Twitter account. It gave no further details.

The Sunni Muslim-ruled island kingdom, home to the U.S. Fifth Fleet, was swept by unrest in 2011 led by majority Shi’ites demanding political reforms.

Protests still erupt from time to time and there have been a growing number of attacks using explosives, often against policemen. In March, three policemen were killed by a remotely-detonated bomb.

Last month, two policemen were injured by a bomb in the Shi’ite village of Deraz west of the capital Manama.

Last month Bahrain held parliamentary elections, boycotted by the opposition which complained that changes to the voting districts would favour the Sunni Muslim minority represented by the ruling family.
