Abu Dhabi Airports has reopened the Northern Runway (13L/31R) at Zayed International Airport (AUH) earlier than expected, following a successful rehabilitation project.

The upgraded runway is now fully operational for both arrivals and departures, reported the state news agency, WAM.

The rehabilitation project involved a series of significant enhancements, including the reinforcement and resurfacing of the runway with 210,000 tonnes of asphalt to ensure durability and resilience.

Additionally, the project saw major technological advancements such as a new ground visibility monitoring system, an advanced instrument landing system (ILS), and the replacement of halogen airfield lights with energy-efficient LED technology.

This transition to LED lighting aligns with Abu Dhabi Airports’ commitment to sustainability, while the upgrades to navigational aids like the ILS and runway visual range (RVR) systems enhance safety and efficiency during inclement weather.

The reopening of the Northern Runway will allow Zayed International Airport to more effectively manage increasing airline demand.

Meticulous planning led to the early reopening of the Northern Runway

Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, director general of the GCAA, praised the successful completion of the project, highlighting its contribution to the UAE’s aviation sector and its commitment to innovation and sustainable growth.

Elena Sorlini, MD and CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports, attributed the project’s early completion to meticulous planning, effective collaboration, and a dedication to operational excellence.

She emphasised that the enhanced infrastructure will enable the airport to meet growing air traffic demand and optimise throughput.

During the runway closure, Abu Dhabi Airports successfully managed operations at AUH using the Southern Runway as a single-runway operation.
