The UAE capital climbed three places to secure 10th position, while Dubai also improved its standing, moving from 17th to 12th place among 142 cities worldwide. The two cities were among the most impressive in performance, as per the IMD report. Key factors for the rankings The impressive rise of Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the Smart City Index is attributed to a multitude of factors encompassing economic and technological advancements, quality of life improvements, environmental sustainability, and inclusive policies. Here’s a closer look at why these cities have excelled: 1. Technological advancements Both Abu Dhabi and Dubai have heavily invested in cutting-edge technologies to enhance city management and services. Initiatives include the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in municipal services such as traffic management, surveillance, and energy consumption. The use of AI not only optimises resource allocation but also improves the efficiency and responsiveness of city services. 2. Quality of life enhancements A significant contributor to their high rankings is the focus on improving the quality of life for residents. Riyadh climbed five places to 25th, while Makkah and Jeddah were ranked 52nd and 55th, respectively. Doha saw a notable increase of 11 places, reaching 59th, and Muscat was positioned at 88th. IMD’s Smart City Index The Smart City Index by IMD, now in its fifth edition, focuses on the economic, technological, and humane dimensions of smart cities. It considers factors such as quality of life, environmental sustainability, and inclusiveness.
