DEWA joins CharIN to advance green mobility

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has joined the Charging Interface Initiative (CharIN) as a core member, in a move that reinforces the utility major’s commitment to advancing green mobility and energy.

The membership will allow DEWA to actively participate in establishing industry standards for electric vehicle (EV) charging systems. It will also pave the way for the company to collaborate on developing new technologies to improve the efficiency of green mobility, reduce EV charging costs, and increase charging speed.

DEWA said its involvement in CharIN ensures that the organisation remains aligned with global benchmarks and stays updated with the latest industry advancements.

“We continue to support the Dubai Green Mobility Initiative 2030, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030, which enhances our contribution to reducing carbon emissions in the transport and communications sector and consolidates Dubai’s position as the global capital of green economy and sustainable development,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director & CEO of DEWA.

“Our robust public charging network has played a pivotal role in driving the growth of EVs in the emirate.”

CharIN is a prominent global association with more than 320 members committed to advancing interoperable and unified charging standards such as the Combined Charging System (CCS) and the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) for all types of vehicles.

DEWA launched its EV Green Charger Initiative in 2015. The initiative allows customers to easily and efficiently manage the EV Green Charger services, through the EV Green Charger User Dashboard.

Customers can easily find charging station locations through DEWA’s website, smart app and 14 other digital platforms. Similarly, registered Green Charger customers can enjoy the convenience of cardless services using a QR code. DEWA has installed more than 370 EV charging stations, providing access to more than 680 charging points throughout Dubai.

DEWA boosts Dubai’s green mobility

Meanwhile, Dubai is set to add a compelling eco-friendly dimension to its world-leading driving experience with an ambitious plan to expand EV charging infrastructure in the city. Under the plan, DEWA aims to grow the emirate’s network of public charging stations by 170 per cent in less than three years. By 2025, EV Green Charging Stations in Dubai will increase from the current 370, with more than 680 charging points, to 1,000 Green Charging Stations.

Dubai’s move to green mobility received a strong boost in 2015 when DEWA launched its EV Green Charger Initiative as part of its Green Mobility Strategy 2030.

The number of EV owners registered under the initiative has increased from a mere 14 in 2015 to more than 11,000 by the end of May 2023. The figure is expected to double soon. By 2030, Dubai aims to have over 42,000 electric cars on its roads.

DEWA’s EV Green Chargers have provided 13,264 MWh of electricity from 2015 to the end of 2022, powering a cumulative electric vehicle distance of over 66.3 million km. By the end of 2022, the stations recorded over 720,000 charging sessions conducted by 9,653 registered electric vehicles.

Similarly, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority unveiled a long-term strategy to migrate towards net-zero emission public transport by 2050.
