UAE vessel sinks off Iran coast, all crew rescued – reports

A UAE cargo vessel, with 30 crew members onboard, has sunk in the northern Gulf due to extreme weather conditions.

However, a rescue operation conducted on Thursday, led to all members being rescued, the ship’s operator told The National. 

The ship sank 30 miles off Iran’s Gulf coast near the port city of Assalouyeh.

The vessel was identified as Al Salmy 6 by Dubai-based Salem Al Makrani Cargo. The vessel was used to transport vehicles to Iraq. The company’s operations manager, Captain Nizar Qaddoura, said that the ship after having faced rough weather, capsized.

The manager added that Iranian rescuers saved 16 crew members, while 11 made it on to a life raft, and one person was saved by a nearby tanker. Two crew members initially unaccounted for were also retrieved from the water.

The crew consists of citizens of Sudan, India, Pakistan, Uganda, Tanzania and Ethiopia, Capt Qaddoura said.
