The British-Egyptian director of the London School of Economics enjoyed a huge jump in this year’s ranking thanks to calls for her to succeed Mark Carney as governor of the Bank of England. Dame Nemat Shafik has already cemented her reputation as an influential force in the world of higher education, becoming the first female director of LSE in 2017. Prior to that she was the BoE’s first deputy governor on markets and banking, and member of the bank’s Monetary Policy Committee. Previously Shafik had become the youngest ever vice president at the World Bank, aged just 36, and was also the deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund.
