Heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms and hail are expected in parts of the UAE on Sunday, the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has forecast.

In its daily bulletin, the NCM said that the weather will be hazy and cloudy with a chance of rainfall, especially over the coasts and some northern and eastern areas.

It also confirmed on Twitter that heavy rains with hail fell on Ruwayyah in Dubai on Sunday morning.

An extension of surface low pressure over the country and Arabian Peninsula, accompanied with a trough of low pressure at upper air levels is causing the current weather conditions, it said.

The NCM also predicted a “significant decrease in temperatures” on Sunday.

Temperatures will vary between 13 degrees celsius to 25 degrees in the coastal areas, between 10 degrees and 26 degrees in the internal areas and touch lows of 6 degrees in the mountains, with highs reaching 19 degrees.

Fresh northwesterly winds will also cause “blowing dust and sand” over the exposed areas, which will affect visibility on the roads. Wind speeds are predicted to reach up to 55km/h in the coastal and mountainous regions.

Authorities warned motorists to be careful on the roads.

The NCM also warned that the seas will be rough in the Arabian Gulf and Oman Sea.

Similar weather conditions are predicted for Monday, with a further drop in temperatures anticipated.
