In September last year, dame Nemat ‘Minouche’ Shafik became the first female director of the prestigious London School of Economics, having stepped down from another leading role – deputy governor of the Bank of England. The Egyptian’s appointment was not her first major role, also serving as deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund, vice president of the World Bank, and permanent secretary of the Department for International Development over the years. But the fact that she is the first female director of LSE has helped solidify her status as a role model for women in business – especially from the Arab world.
