The UAE’s housing sector has maintained strong momentum into 2026, with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI), through the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme (SZHP), issuing 759 housing approvals in the first quarter, valued at more than Dhs616m.

According to WAM, the approvals included 129 housing grants and benefits worth Dhs102.9m, alongside 583 housing loans and financing solutions delivered in partnership with national banks, totalling Dhs460.5m. An additional 47 government housing loans within residential complexes were issued, valued at Dhs53.2m.

The figures highlight the accelerating pace of delivery and increasing efficiency within the UAE’s housing support system, underpinned by a shift towards integrated financing models and public-private collaboration.

The performance builds on the programme’s long-term track record. Since its establishment in 1999, the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme has issued more than 73,000 housing support decisions across the UAE, with a total value exceeding Dhs50bn, supporting family stability and improving quality of life.

A key driver of recent progress has been the expansion of partnerships with the private sector, particularly national banks. This model has significantly enhanced operational efficiency, eliminating more than 12,000 backlog applications and increasing the fulfilment rate from 34 per cent to 94 per cent. The approach has also contributed to achieving a 91 per cent homeownership rate, reflecting the broader socio-economic impact of the UAE’s housing policies.

Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, said: “The rapid progress witnessed in the UAE’s housing sector reflects the forward-looking vision of our leadership and its commitment to providing adequate housing for citizens as a cornerstone of family stability and a key pillar of quality of life. The UAE’s housing policies are based on an integrated approach that places people at the forefront, translating the leadership’s directives into building a cohesive, prosperous, and stable society.”

He added that these efforts align with national development frameworks, including “We the UAE 2031” and the UAE Centennial 2071, supporting the creation of resilient and sustainable communities.

Mohammed Al Mansoori, Undersecretary for Infrastructure and Transport Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, said, “The UAE’s housing ecosystem is undergoing a strategic transformation driven by innovative financing models, stronger private sector partnerships, and the adoption of smart solutions that enhance service efficiency and accelerate housing delivery in a sustainable manner. This approach ensures a balance between financial sustainability and social impact, while strengthening the sector’s ability to keep pace with population growth and future challenges.”

The latest approvals reinforce the UAE’s broader strategy to build a comprehensive, future-ready housing ecosystem that supports long-term urban development, economic resilience, and citizen wellbeing.

Two expatriates have been injured following an attack on a residential building in northern Oman, according to the Oman News Agency.

A security source said the building, which houses company employees in the Tibat area of the Wilayat of Bukha, was targeted in the incident.

The Wilayat of Bukha is located in the Musandam governorate, a strategic peninsula overlooking the Strait of Hormuz, which has been the centre of regional tensions amid the Iran war on Monday.

The attack resulted in what were described as moderate injuries to the two expatriates. Four vehicles were also damaged, while windows in a nearby house were shattered.

Authorities have not disclosed the nature of the attack or the identities of those injured.

Omani officials confirmed that an investigation is underway, with relevant authorities working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

They reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of both citizens and residents, amid heightened regional tensions impacting parts of the Gulf.

The UAE Ministry of Education has announced the implementation of distance learning from Tuesday, May 5, 2026, until Friday, May 8, 2026, affecting students, teachers, and administrative staff across nurseries and all public and private schools nationwide.

“This measure is being taken to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the educational community,” the authority said, adding that the situation will be reviewed on Friday, May 8, 2026, with a possible extension if required, according to its official Instagram account.

The temporary transition marks a coordinated national response aimed at maintaining educational continuity while prioritising safety across all school levels.

Universities also transition to remote learning

In a parallel move, the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research on May 4 announced the temporary shift to remote learning across all higher education institutions in the country, effective from Tuesday, May 5, 2026, through Friday, May 8, 2026.

This measure is part of regulatory actions aimed at ensuring the continuity of the educational process with efficiency and flexibility, a WAM report said. Priority academic programmes that require clinical training, laboratory use, direct practical or field-based application, or in-person examinations are exempt; such programmes will continue with face-to-face instruction, as determined by the ministry.

Move comes weeks after return to in-person schooling

The decision comes shortly after schools across the UAE welcomed students back to classrooms on April 20, when in-person learning resumed following comprehensive readiness and safety planning.

Ahead of that reopening, the Ministry of Education completed specialised training for teaching and administrative staff to ensure a safe transition. Operational arrangements, including school transport services, were implemented under strict safety standards, while school buildings underwent rigorous safety evaluations. Detailed guidelines were also issued to support both academic readiness and psychological wellbeing among students and staff.
