The Republican-led US House of Representatives has approved a war powers resolution aimed at limiting President Donald Trump’s ability to continue military operations against Iran without congressional approval, in a rare bipartisan rebuke of the administration’s Iran policy. The measure passed by a vote of 215-208, with four Republicans joining Democrats in support.
According to Reuters, the resolution directs the president to withdraw US armed forces from hostilities involving Iran unless Congress formally declares war or authorises the use of military force. While the measure faces significant hurdles before becoming law, including Senate approval and a potential presidential veto, the vote reflects growing concern among lawmakers over the scope of executive war powers.
The House vote marks one of the most significant congressional challenges to Trump’s handling of the conflict since US and Israeli military operations against Iran began earlier this year. Several previous attempts to advance similar legislation had failed in both chambers of Congress.
The resolution’s passage comes amid mounting political and economic scrutiny of the conflict, which has contributed to heightened geopolitical tensions across the Middle East and disruption to key energy and shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz. Lawmakers backing the measure argued that Congress, rather than the White House alone, should decide whether the United States remains engaged in a prolonged military conflict, PBS News reported.
Although largely symbolic at this stage, the vote highlights growing bipartisan unease over the conflict and could add pressure on the administration as ceasefire negotiations and diplomatic efforts continue, Reuters stated.
