Kuwait’s civil aviation authority has released video footage showing the aftermath of an Iranian attack on Kuwait International Airport, as the country moves to restore flight operations following one of the most serious escalations of the regional conflict to directly affect its territory.
The footage, published by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), captures what it described as the “first moments” after Terminal 1 (T1) was struck during the attack on June 3.
“Building (T1) was subjected to targeting by drones and missiles from the Iranian aggression, resulting in significant damage to several airport facilities, in addition to recording human injuries,” said Abdullah Al-Rajhi, official spokesperson for Kuwait’s DGCA.
According to Reuters, Kuwait’s foreign ministry said one person was killed in the attack, while the health ministry reported at least 63 people were injured, including airport workers and passengers.
The DGCA’s released footage shows significant damage to Terminal 1, which authorities said bore the brunt of the attack. The authority described the incident as a “brutal aggression” that caused severe human and material losses.
The attack on Wednesday prompted the immediate activation of Kuwait International Airport’s emergency plan, with authorities suspending air traffic and diverting flights to alternative airports while security and technical assessments were carried out.
Technical teams and specialist authorities were deployed to inspect airport facilities, assess damage to operational systems and begin preparations for repairs and rehabilitation work.
Despite the damage to Terminal 1, Kuwait moved quickly to restore operations at other parts of the airport.
The DGCA announced on Wednesday that all Kuwait Airways flights had resumed through Terminal 4 (T4), while all Jazeera Airways services resumed through Terminal 5 (T5) after technical inspections confirmed both facilities were free from damage that could affect operational safety.
The authority said field inspections and technical evaluations were conducted in coordination with multiple government agencies before operations restarted.
“The safety of passengers and employees remains the utmost priority,” the DGCA said, adding that it would continue coordinating with relevant authorities to ensure operations continue in line with the highest standards of security and safety.
The attack has also triggered a diplomatic response from Kuwait.
Later on Wednesday, Kuwait summoned Iran’s charge d’affaires and declared two Iranian diplomats persona non grata over what the foreign ministry described as “ongoing aggressions”.
Meanwhile, Bahrain was also targeted in missile attacks on Wednesday but US authorities said these were succesfully intercepted.
