The year 1991 marked the beginning of NAFFCO Group.

Starting with just 15 employees and a modest facility manufacturing basic fire extinguishers, NAFFCO Group now stands as a global powerhouse and the world’s No. 1 total solutions provider in the fire and safety space. With over 15,000 employees and state-of-the-art facilities spanning 10.5 million square feet, the company’s journey is a masterclass in transformation.

“At our inception, it was about saving lives,” recalls Chief Executive Officer Eng. Khalid Al Khatib. Khalid’s journey into fire safety started long before NAFFCO Group’s inception. “From the beginning, we focused not just on manufacturing products but on building trust and delivering solutions that truly protect lives,” he says. From pioneering high-pressure CO2 cylinder manufacturing in 1998 to redefining UAE safety standards in 2004, NAFFCO Group’s evolution exemplifies adaptability and foresight.

Khalid’s leadership style embraces grit, efficiency, and innovation. “Success is more than innovation,” he states. “It’s persistence through setbacks and the determination to thrive under pressure.” NAFFCO Group’s innovative spirit has led to custom-engineered safety solutions catering to diverse sectors — from healthcare to high-rise buildings. Today, its products and services range from fire alarms and sprinklers to AI- and IoT-powered safety systems.

Over the years, NAFFCO Group has contributed to iconic projects such as the Burj Khalifa, which required designing a gravity-fed sprinkler system unique to the world’s tallest structure. The Dubai Metro stands as another testament to the company’s capabilities, integrating comprehensive fire detection and suppression systems for the transport network. NAFFCO Group’s impact extends beyond borders too. In Bangladesh, the company modernised fire safety across 3,000 factories, significantly reducing fire-related fatalities. In Senegal, their deployment of turnkey fire safety solutions elevated industrial safety standards, benefiting economies and protecting lives. Their contributions also include large-scale industrial complexes, international airports, oil and gas industries, and marine projects.

Khalid notes that every environment poses unique challenges, but innovation has always been at the core of NAFFCO Group’s approach. From addressing rust issues in conventional piping by replacing them with high-density polyethylene pipes to developing advanced firefighting vehicles for critical applications, the company continues to push boundaries. Khalid credits much of NAFFCO Group’s growth to the unwavering commitment of its team. “From a single facility to a global operation of 15,000 employees serving over 100 countries, our progress is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and a relentless pursuit of excellence,” he adds, reflecting on the company’s journey as one of the world’s leading producers and suppliers of top-tier firefighting equipment, fire protection systems, fire alarms, and security and safety engineering systems. NAFFCO Group has positioned itself as a one-stop total solutions provider, catering to diverse industries worldwide.

Leadership transition

After establishing itself as a global leader, the baton of leadership at NAFFCO Group is transitioning. Khalid Al Khatib is increasingly entrusting the future of his company to his sons, Ahmed and Ali. “Ahmed and Ali have been part of the journey from the beginning, contributing significantly to NAFFCO Group’s growth,” says Khalid.

Ahmed Khalid Al Khatib, Group Managing Director at NAFFCO Group, with over a decade of experience, plays a pivotal role in managing operations across the NAFFCO Group. He is transforming global safety standards through advanced engineering, innovative practices, and a commitment to sustainability. With expertise cultivated over the past decade, Ahmed seamlessly integrates high-tech safety systems with efficient manufacturing processes, driving strategic growth and establishing new facilities in key markets such as the UAE, USA, KSA, Qatar, and Egypt.

Ali Khalid Al Khatib now leads as Group Managing Director, with a focus on driving global expansion and overseeing vehicle manufacturing and worldwide operations. Under his watch, NAFFCO Group has strengthened its foothold in over 100 countries across five continents. His efforts have been instrumental in aligning NAFFCO Group’s offerings with local regulations while maintaining its commitment to exceeding global standards.

Ahmed Khalid Al Khatib, group managing director, NAFFCO Group

The brothers’ leadership has introduced a renewed energy into NAFFCO Group. “It’s inspiring to work alongside a new generation of leaders who share the same passion for innovation and excellence,” says Eng. Khalid. Under Ahmed’s leadership, NAFFCO Group has pioneered cutting-edge solutions across diverse sectors, including firefighting equipment, fire alarm systems, fire doors, security solutions, flow control, modular systems, cladding, smoke management, and oil and gas safety. Notable innovations include IoT-enabled safety technologies that integrate real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and automated alerts, shifting safety management from reactive to proactive. “Through AI integration, we are creating solutions that anticipate and address issues before they escalate,” Ahmed shares.

Ali’s contributions to expanding NAFFCO Group’s manufacturing capabilities have been equally transformative. With new facilities in Saudi Arabia, Australia, the UAE, USA, and India, the company is poised to meet growing global demands. “Scaling up is not just about numbers; it’s about maintaining quality at every step,” Ali explains. The establishment of a 1.9 million sq. ft. manufacturing plant for ARFF vehicles, firefighting trucks, and ambulances underscores this commitment. “These vehicles are not just products; they’re lifelines in critical environments,” Ali adds.

Eng. Khalid reflects on this transition with pride. “The foundation we built is strong, but it’s the vision of the next generation that will take NAFFCO Group to even greater heights,” he says.

Global expansion and impact

NAFFCO Group’s global footprint now spans over 100 countries, supported by manufacturing facilities in the UAE, UK, US, Australia, Qatar, KSA, Egypt, and India. This vast network reflects the company’s commitment to delivering fire safety solutions at a scale unmatched in the industry. “Our mission has always been to ensure safety wherever it’s needed,” says Ali. “Each manufacturing facility represents our dedication to quality, efficiency, and innovation.” Their flagship facility, a 950,000 sq. ft. ARFF chassis plant, epitomises this ambition, producing custom-built vehicles for critical environments. “We set the benchmark in fire safety,” Ali notes, highlighting their annual production capacity of 5,000 vehicles.

Each project posed unique challenges, which were met with bespoke solutions. “For Expo 2020, we integrated safety systems that complemented the event’s futuristic architectural vision,” Ahmed explains.

The commitment to training extends to community outreach. NAFFCO Group’s free certifications for engineers aim to elevate safety standards across regions. “Education is a pillar of safety,” Eng. Khalid explains. “When individuals are informed and skilled, entire communities benefit.”

Sustainability is at the heart of NAFFCO Group’s innovations. From developing fluorine-free foam extinguishers to manufacturing high-density polyethylene pipes that eliminate rust and last over 50 years, the company demonstrates its commitment to the environment. Its range of hybrid-electric fire trucks and eco-friendly firefighting foams sets benchmarks in reducing carbon footprints.

Future vision and strategy

Ahmed’s focus on technological leadership extends to advanced training programmes, training over 2,500 professionals annually. The introduction of VR-based training modules has significantly enhanced preparedness for high-risk scenarios, ensuring that trainees are equipped with the skills to make a real difference. Alongside training, Ahmed oversees critical operational areas, including procurement, where efforts are focused on reducing the cost of raw materials without compromising quality.

The company’s ambitious expansion, supported by new R&D, will bolster its capacity for projects like flood management vehicles capable of relocating water in disaster-stricken regions. “Innovative solutions are the cornerstone of our growth,” Ali remarks. Continuous improvement is a core tenet of NAFFCO Group’s philosophy. “We believe in learning from every project and using that knowledge to innovate further,” says Ali. Sustainability initiatives, like eco-friendly fire suppression agents and hybrid rescue vehicles, further reinforce the company’s forward-thinking approach.

NAFFCO Group’s in-house capabilities, from design to production, ensure rigorous quality control. This dedication is reflected in the company’s growing list of accolades for innovation and sustainability. “Every accolade is a reminder of our responsibility to lead by example,” Eng. Khalid says.

The company’s vision extends beyond products and systems to encompass global safety advocacy. By introducing advanced analytics and AI into fire safety systems, NAFFCO Group is shaping a future where technology and human expertise work seamlessly together. “We’re not just meeting today’s needs; we’re shaping tomorrow’s standards in saving lives, environment, and property,” Eng. Khalid concludes.

The Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), part of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, has announced new restrictions on the movement of heavy vehicles in Abu Dhabi city to improve traffic flow and enhance road safety.

Abu Dhabi Mobility is working closely with the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters to ensure compliance with the new rules.

Effective January 27, 2025, the updated policy restricts the movement of freight vehicles, trucks, tankers, and heavy equipment during peak hours on weekdays and Fridays.

List of updated timings for heavy vehicle movement in Abu Dhabi

The updated hours will apply from Monday to Thursday, with restrictions in place from 6:30 am to 9 am in the morning and again from 3 pm to 7 pm.

On Fridays, heavy vehicles will be prohibited from 6:30 am to 9 am and 11 am to 1 pm. These measures aim to mitigate the impact of heavy vehicles interacting with lighter traffic during peak periods, a situation which can lead to fluctuating vehicle speeds, traffic accidents, and congestion.

Gold prices hit an over 11-week peak on Wednesday, not far from an all-time peak touched last year, boosted by safe haven demand stemming from uncertainty surrounding US President Donald Trump’s trade policies and a softer dollar.

Spot gold added 0.3 per cent to $2,751.89 per ounce, after hitting its highest since November 1 earlier in the session and closing in on its record peak of $2,790.15 hit in October. US gold futures GCcv1 gained 0.3 per cent to $2,768.40.

“There is still some uncertainty regarding when Trump wants to implement his policies on major trading partners of the US, causing a lot of uncertainty in direction of dollar, which is the primary short-term catalyst driving bullish tone in gold price,” said Kelvin Wong, OANDA’s senior market analyst for Asia Pacific.

A weaker dollar makes gold more attractive for holders of other currencies. Gold is considered a safe investment during economic and geopolitical uncertainty.

Trump vowed to hit the European Union with tariffs and said his administration was discussing a 10 per cent tariff on goods imported from China starting February 1.

Gold‘s appeal as an inflation hedge may be diminished if Trump’s policies, which are seen as inflationary, lead the Federal Reserve to maintain interest rates higher for longer. Higher interest rates dampen non-yielding gold‘s appeal.

The Fed meets next week with one eye on the new Trump administration’s policies and another on the bond market that has ratcheted up borrowing costs even as US central bankers have been cutting rates. It is expected to hold its benchmark rate steady at the meeting.

“Macro and trade uncertainty and the prospects of a deteriorating fiscal situation are supporting haven demand. Central bank purchases set a strong demand base, but we expect investment demand to lift, offsetting losses in physical demand,” ANZ said in a note.

Saudi Aramco expects additional oil demand of 1.3 million bpd in 2025

Aramco’s chief executive Amin Nasser said that oil demand in 2025 will approach 106 million barrels per day (bpd) after averaging about 104.6 million bpd last year

Saudi oil giant Aramco’s chief executive Amin Nasser said on Tuesday he sees the oil market as healthy and expects an additional 1.3 million barrels per day of demand this year.

Speaking to Reuters on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Nasser was responding to a question on the impact of US President Donald Trump’s energy decisions, which could increase US hydrocarbon output.

Oil demand this year will approach 106 million barrels per day after averaging about 104.6 million barrels per day in 2024, he said.

“We still think the market is healthy … last year we averaged around 104.6 million barrels (per day), this year, we’re expecting an additional demand of about 1.3 million barrels … so there is growth in the market,” he said.

Asked about US sanctions on Russian crude tankers, he said the situation was still at an early stage.

“If you look at the impacted barrels, you’re talking about more than 2 million barrels,” he said. “We will wait and see how would that translate into tightness in the market, it is still in the early stage.”

Asked if China and India have sought additional oil volumes from Saudi Arabia on the back of the sanctions, Nasser said Aramco is bound by the levels the kingdom’s energy ministry allows it to pump. Saudi Arabia has been pumping at about three-quarters of its output capacity as part of agreements with OPEC+ to support the market.

“The kingdom and the Ministry of Energy are always looking at balancing the market. They take that into account when they give us the target of how much we should put in the market,” he said.

Aramco is working with MidOcean, an LNG firm in which it took a 51 per cent stake, and is “looking at expanding our position globally in LNG,” without giving details, Nasser said.

In an interview with Gulf Business, Charles Leslie, global business lead for the Pain Portfolio & Systemics at Haleon, outlines key consumer health trends reshaping the healthcare sector, with a focus on self-care, personalised wellness, and the growing role of technology.

Leslie also highlights Haleon’s initiatives, including the launch of the Haleon Pain Management Institute (HPMI) and the company’s strategic focus on the UAE and GCC regions, to meet the evolving healthcare needs of consumers.

What are the key consumer health trends shaping the healthcare sector today?

The healthcare sector is undergoing a profound transformation, fueled by consumer health trends that are reshaping how we view health and wellness. One of the most noticeable trends is an increased emphasis on self-care. Consumers are becoming more proactive in managing their health, thanks to increased access to information and a growing recognition of the value of preventative care. This is especially evident in the growing demand for over-the-counter products, which offer convenient and affordable solutions to everyday health issues.

Another significant trend is personalized health and wellness, as consumers are seeking tailored solutions that fit their lifestyles. This shift is being driven by technological and data advancements, which allow for more precise and individualized care.

Haleon embraces these trends by focusing on everyday health through initiatives such as the Haleon Pain Management Institute, which empowers consumers and healthcare professionals to create a more accessible, effective, and sustainable healthcare future.

What role does technology play in transforming consumer healthcare? How has this changed since the pandemic and how do you see this progressing over the years?

Technology helps to transform consumer healthcare by empowering both individuals and healthcare professionals. Haleon uses technology to enhance understanding, drive product innovation, and improve access to everyday health. Since the pandemic, the role of technology has grown significantly, allowing us to communicate more directly with consumers and healthcare providers. Digital health initiatives have become critical to providing accessible, dependable, and personalised health solutions.

Looking ahead, advancements in digital platforms, data-driven insights, and artificial intelligence will continue to improve personalized care and close healthcare access gaps. Technology is critical to our mission of delivering everyday health to humanity, ensuring a future where healthcare is more accessible, effective, and sustainable for all.

Why is pain management a critical focus area for Haleon, and how does the newly launched HPMI contribute to addressing this need?

Pain is a widespread phenomenon. Haleon’s proprietary social stud, the 5th edition of the Haleon Pain Index [HPI 5] has uncovered startling figures. Over 91 per cent of the world’s population suffers from pain each year. Pain has a direct impact on the quality of life for millions of people around the world.

Chronic and acute pain are two of the most common health issues, affecting not only individuals but also putting significant strain on healthcare systems. At Haleon, we believe that effectively addressing pain requires providing patients and healthcare professionals with the tools, knowledge, and resources they need to manage it holistically.

The newly established Haleon Pain Management Institute (HPMI) represents a significant step in this direction. Its mission is to advance the science of pain through innovative research, strategic partnerships, and customised education programmes.

The HPMI fosters better patient outcomes by equipping frontline healthcare providers with cutting-edge skills and a deeper understanding of patient behaviour. This initiative demonstrates our commitment to improving everyday health and effecting meaningful change in how pain is understood and managed.

What inspired the company to choose the UAE and GCC as a key focus area for the HPMI and other healthcare initiatives?

This is the first time we have included a country from the region in HPI 5. Because of their dynamic healthcare landscape and commitment to innovation, the UAE and the wider GCC region were natural choices for Haleon to focus its efforts on the HPMI and other healthcare initiatives. The region is actively advancing healthcare infrastructure and policy, making it an ideal partner for initiatives that aim to improve everyday health.

The UAE, in particular, has established itself as a global hub for healthcare innovation and a pioneer in implementing forward-thinking approaches. Its strategic vision is closely aligned with Haleon’s mission to provide accessible and sustainable healthcare, particularly in the areas of pain management, preventative care, and health literacy. Therefore, it makes complete sense for us to launch our global initiative here in the UAE.

Furthermore, the GCC’s diverse population and unique healthcare challenges, such as the rising prevalence of chronic diseases, highlight the critical importance of initiatives like the HPMI. Haleon’s focus on this region not only addresses local health needs, but also contributes to global healthcare advancements.

What is the company’s vision for the future of consumer healthcare, and how does it align with global health equity?

Haleon’s vision for the future of consumer healthcare is based on empowering people to take control of their health while making everyday healthcare more accessible, sustainable, and innovative. We are committed to improving health outcomes by emphasizing preventative care, health literacy, and personalised solutions that address the unique needs of individuals and communities. This vision centres on global health equity. Haleon believes that healthcare access should be a universal right rather than a privilege.

Haleon works to bridge gaps in healthcare access by promoting self-care practices and fostering partnerships with healthcare professionals, ensuring that its mission of everyday health with humanity benefits individuals and communities worldwide.

Preventative healthcare is becoming an increasingly important aspect of consumer health. How is Haleon addressing this growing demand, and what role do your products play in helping consumers proactively manage their health?

Preventative healthcare is a key component of Haleon’s commitment to improving overall health. We believe that empowering individuals to take proactive steps to manage their health is critical to meeting the growing global demand for sustainable and affordable healthcare solutions. Our trusted brands play a key role in preventative care by providing solutions to help consumers maintain their health. Centrum, for example, supports nutritional needs, whereas Sensodyne and Parodontax promote oral health and help prevent more serious dental issues.

In addition to our products, Haleon supports initiatives that promote health literacy and empower consumers to make informed decisions. We promote preventative health through education campaigns, pharmacist programs, and partnerships.

Haleon helps people take control of their health journeys by raising awareness and providing accessible solutions, thereby reducing the strain on healthcare systems.

How does Haleon approach educating consumers on the importance of self-care and health management? What strategies do you use to ensure that consumers are equipped with the knowledge to make informed decisions about their healthcare?

At Haleon, educating consumers about self-care and health management is central to our mission of providing everyday health to humanity.

In the region, we prioritize tailored initiatives that address specific health needs and raise awareness. For example, the ‘Healthy Saudi Smile’ campaign in Saudi Arabia raises oral health awareness by educating the public about proper brushing techniques, the importance of regular dental check-ups, and how oral health affects overall wellbeing. Additionally, Haleon has implemented an AI-powered Health Inclusivity Screener to ensure that health messages are accessible, culturally relevant, and understandable to the region’s diverse populations.

We empower consumers to make informed healthcare decisions through these campaigns, pharmacist training programs, and social media outreach. By increasing health literacy, we hope to help people live healthier lives and have a positive impact on their communities.

How does the company view the future of consumer healthcare in emerging markets, particularly in the GCC and wider MENA region? What are the unique opportunities and challenges you foresee in these markets?

Haleon’s vision for the future of consumer healthcare is centred on emerging markets, particularly those in the GCC and MENA regions. These regions present significant opportunities, including increased awareness of preventative health and self-care, and increased investment in healthcare infrastructure. The UAE and Saudi Arabia are leading the way with innovative healthcare policies and a digitally connected population eager to adopt proactive health management. There is also a sharp – and unexpected – generational divide in the way people experience pain, suggesting that younger rather than older patients struggle most with making their pain known.

As one of the regions with some of the youngest populations, we must step up our activities to address these challenges. Our initiatives in these markets are aimed at addressing consumer issues like health literacy and the adoption of self-care habits. We want to empower people to take control of their health.

The main challenge, as for any market, would be aligning with local needs. By doing so and leveraging expertise, we can assist in achieving sustainable, accessible healthcare solutions.

The UAE is positioning itself as a healthcare hub in the region. How do you see Haleon contributing to the country’s vision for healthcare, and what specific challenges or opportunities does the UAE present in the consumer healthcare space?

The UAE’s ‘We the UAE 2031’ vision seeks to establish the country as a global leader in healthcare by emphasising advanced, integrated, and accessible healthcare systems. Haleon is closely aligned with this goal, driving initiatives that empower people to take control of their health and promote preventative care.

We prioritise health literacy as a critical area for advancing the UAE’s goals. By educating consumers through targeted campaigns and partnering with healthcare professionals, we hope to bridge gaps in awareness and enable informed decision-making.

The UAE’s commitment to digital transformation and innovation opens up opportunities for Haleon to expand its reach via advanced platforms. Adapting to evolving regulations and meeting the needs of a growing population will require ongoing collaboration with local stakeholders. Haleon continues to support the UAE’s healthcare vision by aligning our efforts with the country’s objectives for accessible, sustainable, and innovative healthcare.

Kuwait’s oil production capacity now exceeds 3 million barrels per day (bpd), Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) CEO Sheikh Nawaf Saud al-Sabah said on Tuesday.

The country’s oil production capacity was at more than 2.8 million bpd in June last year, Ahmad Jaber Al-Eidan, the CEO of KPC subsidiary Kuwait Oil Company (KOC), said at the time.

Kuwait aims to boost its oil output to 4 million bpd by 2035, having previously missed a goal of reaching that level by 2020.

Commenting on US President Donald Trump’s views on fossil fuels, Sheikh Nawaf said there is no alternative to oil as a primary source of energy, “neither now nor in the future”.

“Perhaps this is what President Trump and officials in the US have realised, that there must be continued exploration and production of oil, and this is what we reflect here in Kuwait. We know that demand for Kuwaiti oil will increase in the future.”

Trump signed a flurry of orders within hours of his inauguration on Monday intended to boost the United States’ already record-high oil and gas production.

Al-Eidan said KOC aims to reach “full production” from discovered offshore fields within eight to 10 years.

Of the 4 million bpd of oil production capacity Kuwait is targeting by 2035, 350,000 bpd of capacity is expected to come from an area called the Neutral Zone, jointly operated with Saudi Arabia.

Last year, Kuwait said it had made a “giant” oil discovery with an estimated reserves of 3.2 billion barrels. It said on Monday it had found 800 million medium-density oil barrels and 600 billion standard cubic feet of associated gas offshore.

Sheikh Nawaf said Kuwait has completed engineering studies for the Durra gas field and is proceeding according to a plan agreed with Saudi Arabia.

A Kuwaiti-Saudi Arabian development agreement signed in 2023 has been criticised by Iran, which claims a stake in the field. Durra holds an estimated 20 trillion cubic feet in proven reserves.
