State news agency WAM reported that the group had been sentenced to jail terms “for a variety of offences”. On top of the pardon, Sheikh Khalifa will also settle any financial obligations of the prisoners. “The move comes as part of President Sheikh Khalifa’s keenness to give the pardoned prisoners a chance to start a new life, and alleviate the suffering of their families,” said WAM. The rulers of the UAE and other Gulf countries typically order the release of prisoners as a gesture of compassion during the holy month of Ramadan and Eid Al Adha More than 1,000 prisoners were released in the UAE in for Ramadan.
