WhatsApp is rolling out a major set of updates aimed at making communication easier across devices, improving group conversations, and giving users more control over how they connect.

The messaging platform has introduced new calling capabilities on WhatsApp Web, along with upgrades to group chats, including enhanced polls, @all mentions, and faster ways to create new conversations from existing groups.

The latest improvements come as WhatsApp continues to strengthen its position as one of the world’s most widely used communication platforms, with more than 100 million users in the US and over 3 billion users globally.

WhatsApp brings calling features to the web

One of the biggest additions is Web Calling, which allows users to make and receive audio and video calls directly through WhatsApp Web without downloading an additional application.

The feature is designed for users who rely on shared computers, workplace devices that restrict app installations, or those who simply prefer using a browser. Users can now access one-on-one and group calls while staying within their existing web experience, a WhatsApp blog conveyed.

WhatsApp said the web-based calling experience includes many of the same features available across its other platforms, including screen sharing, reactions, a dedicated Calls tab, call history, and favorite contacts.

The company emphasized that calls made through the web remain end-to-end encrypted, with no time restrictions and no additional costs.

New tools make calls more flexible and reliable

Alongside Web Calling, WhatsApp has introduced several features designed to improve how users manage conversations across multiple devices.

The new Call Transfer feature allows users to move an active group call from one device to another without disconnecting. For example, someone can begin a call on a smartphone while traveling and transfer it to WhatsApp Web or Desktop after reaching home or the office.

The company is also adding Waiting Room controls for group calls. When users create a WhatsApp call link and enable the “Require approval to join” option, participants will enter a waiting room until the host approves their entry.

WhatsApp is also improving video quality with QuickHD, which allows users to experience high-definition video within the first few seconds of a call instead of waiting for quality improvements during the conversation.

In addition, Noise Suppression technology has been introduced to reduce background sounds and make voices clearer, especially in busy environments. Users can manage the feature through their in-call settings.

WhatsApp said these calling updates are being released gradually and will become available to all users soon.

Group chats get faster decision-making tools

WhatsApp is also upgrading group chats with new features designed to improve collaboration and make conversations easier to manage.

The company has enhanced polls by adding three new capabilities: the ability to set an expiration time for voting, hide voter names for more privacy, and edit poll questions within 15 minutes after they are created.

The improvements are aimed at helping groups make decisions faster, whether they are choosing meeting locations, organizing events, or coordinating plans.

Another major addition is the @all feature, which allows users to notify everyone in a group chat at once instead of manually tagging individual members.

The feature is intended for important updates such as workplace announcements, event changes, deadlines, or urgent planning messages. For groups with more than 32 members, WhatsApp will limit the ability to use @all mentions to administrators.

While @all notifications can appear even in muted group chats, users will still have control over their notification preferences and can disable these alerts through settings.

WhatsApp makes creating new groups easier

The platform is also simplifying how users create new group chats. A new feature allows people to quickly start a separate conversation with members from an existing group without adding participants individually.

WhatsApp said the update could be useful for creating side discussions, organizing surprise events, managing logistics, or continuing conversations without overwhelming the main group.

The company has continued expanding group chat capabilities throughout the year, previously introducing features such as group message history, member tags, and event reminders.

With the latest updates, WhatsApp is positioning its platform as more than just a messaging service, adding tools that support personal conversations, workplace communication, and large-scale community interactions.

The company said the new calling and group chat features reflect its continued focus on making communication simpler, more private, and more flexible across devices.

The United States is close to announcing a temporary agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, with Axios reporting that a deal brokered by Oman could be unveiled as early as Wednesday.

The proposed 60-day framework is aimed at restoring commercial shipping through the strategic waterway while creating space for broader negotiations between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s nuclear programme and regional security.

According to Axios, the deal would include:

  • A 60-day reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for commercial shipping, with the possibility of an extension.
  • A commitment to maintain the ceasefire between the US and Iran during the period.
  • Renewed negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme and wider regional security issues.
  • Oman acting as the lead mediator, with support from Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
  • An operational framework under discussion that could see Iran oversee inbound shipping and Oman manage outbound vessel movements, according to the Associated Press.

The Strait of Hormuz handles around one-fifth of global oil consumption and is the main export route for crude oil and liquefied natural gas from Gulf producers, making any reopening significant for global energy markets and shipping.

While President Donald Trump said talks with Iran were progressing well, officials cautioned that the agreement has not yet been finalised and could still change before any formal announcement.

The Reserve Bank of India kept its policy repo rate unchanged at 5.25 per cent on Wednesday, as it awaits data to judge if higher oil prices are stoking inflationary pressures across Asia’s third largest economy.

The decision to hold rates sets India apart from a growing band of regional peers including Indonesia, Philippines and others that have responded to the inflationary fallout from higher energy prices and war-driven currency volatility by tightening policy. Instead, the RBI announced a series of steps at the previous meeting to boost capital inflows and support the rupee.

The central bank’s six-member rate panel, which includes three external members, voted unanimously to keep rates on hold. The rate-setting panel also retained the policy stance at “neutral”.

An overwhelming majority of 68 out of 72 economists polled by Reuters had forecast that the RBI will stand pat on its benchmark interest rates.

Headline inflation has moved above target mainly because of higher fuel prices, while broader price pressures remain in check, RBI governor Sanjay Malhotra said while announcing the policy.

Signalling no rush to act until there is greater clarity on inflation, Malhotra reaffirmed the RBI’s “resolute” commitment to its inflation target.

India’s benchmark 10-year bond yield was flat at 6.7765 per cent, while the rupee weakened marginally to 95.03. The benchmark Nifty 50 index was flat, while BSE Sensex was 0.5 per cent higher.

Inflation in check; growth resilient

The central bank cut its forecast for average inflation in the current financial year to 5 per cent from the 5.1 per cent it projected in June. The forecast for core inflation, which excludes food and fuel, was cut more steeply to 4.3 per cent from 4.7 per cent earlier.

Retail inflation in India rose above the central bank’s medium term target of 4 per cent for the time in 17 months in June but is projected to stay within its tolerance band of 2 per cent-6 per cent in the current fiscal year, giving policymakers breathing room on rates.

The central bank also raised its GDP growth estimate marginally to 6.7 per cent for the year from 6.6 per cent in June.

High frequency economic indicators have projected a mixed picture with the purchasing managers index slipping to a five-year low but demand for credit growing at a much stronger pace of near 18 per cent.

Domestic demand remains resilient but a weak monsoon, trade and geopolitical uncertainties could emerge as risks to growth, Malhotra said.

An Air India flight from Phuket to Delhi encountered severe turbulence during its descent on Tuesday, leaving multiple passengers and cabin crew injured and highlighting the continuing operational challenges airlines face from unexpected weather-related events.

According to Indian media reports, flight AI2379, operated by an Airbus A320, experienced a sudden bout of turbulence shortly before landing in the Indian capital. According to Indian media reports citing airline and aviation sources, the aircraft briefly lost around 300 feet in altitude during the incident before the pilots safely regained control and completed the flight to Delhi.

The aircraft landed safely at Indira Gandhi International Airport, where medical personnel were on standby. Reports said at least 12 people, including passengers and cabin crew, sustained injuries, while some outlets put the total number receiving medical attention at 14. The injuries were reported to be minor, although several individuals were taken to hospital for further evaluation.

For airlines, severe turbulence incidents can trigger aircraft inspections, operational reviews and regulatory reporting requirements, while also placing renewed focus on crew procedures and passenger safety protocols.

The aircraft involved in Tuesday’s incident was able to continue to its destination without further complications, and authorities are expected to review the circumstances surrounding the turbulence as part of standard aviation safety procedures.
