Emirates has activated its agreement with renewable fuels company Neste this month at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport.

Over two million gallons of blended sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) will be delivered to Schiphol’s fuelling system throughout 2024.

The deal signed in October last year marks a significant step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions in air travel.

The fuel delivery represents one of the largest SAF purchases by the Dubai-based airline to date and aligns with its sustainability goals.

The blended SAF incorporates over 700,000 gallons of neat SAF, a fuel with a lifecycle carbon footprint up to 80 per cent lower than conventional jet fuel.

The carrier will track the environmental benefits using industry-standard methodologies.

SAF delivery at Singapore airport is in the pipeline

The partnership with Neste extends beyond Amsterdam. Emirates is also working with the company to introduce SAF at Singapore Changi Airport in the coming months.

“Collaborating with partners like Neste is crucial for reducing emissions,” said Adel Al Redha, Emirates COO. “Strong partnerships, especially at major hubs like Amsterdam, pave the way for increased SAF availability across our network.”

This initiative builds on Emirates’ previous sustainability efforts.

It began using SAF on flights in 2017 and currently operate SAF-powered routes from several European cities.

Additionally, the carrier has joined the UK’s Solent Cluster, aiming to create a large-scale SAF production facility.
