Thoraya Ahmed Obaid

In a further push towards reforms in Saudi Arabia, the all-male 150-member Shura Council appointed 30 women, one of which was Obaid. No stranger to making history, in 2001 Obaid was appointed head of the United Nations Population Fund, becoming the first Saudi Arabian female to be named head of a UN agency. She is also the first Saudi woman to receive a government scholarship to study at an American university.
