A new airport opens in Duqm in south-east Oman on Wednesday, July 23, providing residents and businesses with greater regional and global connectivity.

Oman Air is among the first carriers to touch down, operating four flights a week from Muscat on Embraer 175 aircraft.

The regional airport’s opening provides another key element in Duqm’s strategy to attract more inward investment, complementing the objectives of the city’s Special Economic Zone Authority.

More than $2 billion has been pumped into the port’s quays and drydocks, and other infrastructure such as roads and hotels.

Now it is envisaged the airport will enable greater sea-air transhipment opportunities for goods being transported between rapidly growing Asia and Africa.

Other upcoming developments in the pipeline include fisheries, an oil refinery, a transit hub for petrochemicals, rail link, mineral-based manufacturing, desalinisation plant, hospital, mall, international school, town centre and tourist zone.

The opening date coincides with the 44rd anniversary of Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said coming to power.
