The contract covers the design and construction of one water reservoir in Al Nakhli with a storage capacity of 120 million gallons, and another in Al Lusaily, with a storage capacity of 60 million gallons. The move aims to increase the storage capacity of Dubai to 1,010 million gallons, a statement said. DEWA did not disclose whom the contract was awarded to. “The project includes the design of the reservoirs according to the latest standards of sustainability, and the supervision of the implementation of the project at the two sites,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of DEWA. “The construction and operation of both the reservoirs is expected to be complete within 32 months. “DEWA’s total storage capacity will increase to 1,010 million gallons, compared to the current capacity of 830 million gallons,” he added. The increase in capacity comes as part of DEWA’s strategy to implement infrastructure projects and upgrade the efficiency of water and electricity networks to meet growing demand. “This project implements our strategy to provide a reserve water supply that will meet Dubai’s expected daily consumption of about 412 million gallons per day in 2020, and supports our efforts to strengthen water pipelines and increase water flow to meet the rapid growth of water in various part of Dubai,” added Al Tayer. In June, DEWA also awarded a contract worth Dhs248m to supply, extend and commission 40km of water pipelines in the city. The project includes the extension of GRE (glass-reinforced epoxy) main water pipes for up to 40km along Al Qudra Street in Dubai to the Al Ain highway.
