The UAE Central Bank has announced that it will issue currency notes of Dhs 500 and Dhs 5 denominations reprinted with tactile marks for the blind and sight-impaired.

The new features will be engraved in bleed-off intaglio printing on the edge of the banknotes’ short sides, official news agency WAM reported.

The tactile feature for the Dhs 500 denomination consists of a pair of three horizontal lines, separated by a recognisable distance, around the middle of the right and left short sides of the note.

Meanwhile, the braille version of the Dhs 5 note will consist of a horizontal line in the middle of the right and left short sides of the note.

Overall, the design and other specifications of the two notes will remain the same as in the currency notes currently in circulation, the report added.

The two currency notes will be dispensed to banks in accordance with the Central Bank’s established procedures for cash withdrawal and deposit.

The UAE first introduced braille banknotes in March this year for the Dhs 100 and Dhs 50 denominations.

The Central Bank had said in July last year that it would begin issuing banknotes that will be printed with braille characters.
