Sheikh Hamdan launches first phase of world’s largest waste-to-energy project

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, inaugurated the first phase of the Dhs4bn ($1.09bn) Dubai Waste Management Centre, said to be the ‘world’s largest’ waste-to-energy project.

The facility in Warsan can generate 220 megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable energy, which can power 135,000 residential units.

It can also process two million tonnes of waste per year without any adverse environmental impact.

Sheikh Hamdan said in tweet: “We congratulate the exceptional teams involved in this unique project. We are committed to deploying advanced technologies to build a brighter and more sustainable future.”

In other news, in May, Dubai Municipality announced the completion of its biogas-to-energy project at its Warsan Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The biogas power facility has the capacity to generate 44,250MWh of electricity annually. The project’s daily power generation capacity of 6MW will cover 50 per cent of the plant’s entire operational needs.

The municipality completed the project in partnership with the private sector, in line with the directives of the Dubai government to foster productive private-sector partnerships.
