Nearly 500 expat workers denied contract renewal at Saudi university

The Ministry of Civil Service has reportedly refused to renew the contracts of a significant number of staff

Nearly 500 expat medical professionals working at King Saud University are to lose their jobs after the Ministry of Civil Service refused to renew their contracts, according to reports.

Sources told Al-Watan that the university had requested the renewal of 516 contracts for professionals who had spent more than 10 years in their position.

However, the ministry’s Replacement Administration refused to renew the contracts of 478.

Seven consultant doctors and 31 assistant doctors were granted renewal.

The decision came following complaints from postgraduate degree holders at Saudi universities, who have demanded a review of expatriate workers’ contracts.

They have also called for a 10-year limit on any contract worker’s period of service.
