Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, better known as Masdar, has developed from an early UAE clean-energy initiative into one of the world’s largest renewable-energy investors and developers, with a portfolio spanning solar, wind, battery storage, geothermal energy and green hydrogen.
Established in 2006, Masdar was created as part of Abu Dhabi’s early strategic investment in clean energy. Dr Sultan Al Jaber serves as chairman, while Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi has led the company as chief executive since 2016. Masdar is jointly owned by TAQA, ADNOC and Mubadala, following the introduction of its current ownership structure in 2022. The company’s expansion accelerated markedly during 2025. Masdar’s latest sustainability report shows that capacity from projects in operation or under construction increased by around 40 per cent to 45.8GW. A further 20.7GW of secured projects or projects approaching final investment approval took the total portfolio to 66.5GW by the end of the year. Clean electricity generation from operating projects increased 38 per cent to 40.2TWh.
That expansion puts Masdar more than halfway towards its target of 100GW of renewable-energy capacity by 2030. The company said in January 2026 that it expects to deploy another $30bn-$35bn in equity and project finance during the remainder of the decade.
Its growth has been supported by major international acquisitions, including TERNA ENERGY in Greece, Saeta Yield in Spain and a 50 per cent stake in US renewable-energy producer Terra-Gen.
Masdar is also pushing into increasingly complex energy infrastructure. In Abu Dhabi, it is developing a 5.2GW solar project combined with a 19GWh battery-storage system designed to deliver 1GW of continuous renewable power. Financing for the project, valued at more than $6bn, reached financial close in 2026.
The company has also become a significant sustainable-finance issuer, using green bonds alongside project finance and shareholder capital to fund expansion. Twenty years after its creation, Masdar has evolved into one of the UAE’s principal international clean-energy platforms. Its next challenge is not simply adding capacity, but converting a rapidly expanding global portfolio into durable operating earnings while maintaining investment discipline across increasingly diverse markets and technologies.
