Dubai’s Global Village has announced a limited-time Ramadan family promotion, introducing discounted entry bundles and extended evening operating hours as part of its seasonal programming strategy.

The multicultural destination is offering four entry tickets for Dhs30, with additional tickets priced at Dhs7.5 each. The promotion will be available exclusively at ticket counters from the first day of Ramadan and is subject to terms and conditions. The pricing initiative is positioned to drive higher family footfall during the Holy Month, traditionally a peak period for evening leisure activity across the UAE.

Operating hours during Ramadan will run from 5:00pm to 1:00am from Sunday to Wednesday, and until 2:00am from Thursday to Saturday.

Ramadan-themed gathering space

In addition to ticket discounts, Global Village has introduced Multaqa Global Village, a Ramadan-themed gathering space with free entry, designed as a communal area for families and groups. The space will host games and offer access to food and beverage options across the destination.

The Ramadan programming lineup includes live entertainment and cultural performances, including the Al Mandoos show on Fridays and Saturdays at 9:30pm between February 20 and March 7. A 25-piece Arabian Orchestra will perform daily on the Main Stage for 60-minute sets, alongside traditional musical acts and Ramadan-themed performances.

The destination will also host a special Ramadan drone show on February 20 at 9:30pm, as well as its regular Friday and Saturday fireworks displays at 10:30pm. A daily iftar cannon ceremony will mark sunset during the Holy Month.

Disney and Paramount Skydance have sent cease-and-desist letters to ByteDance, alleging copyright infringement in its Seedance 2.0 AI video generator. Disney claims unauthorized use of its characters, including Spider-Man and Darth Vader, to train the AI. Disney has sent a cease-and-desist letter to ByteDance accusing the Chinese company of using Disney characters to train and power its Seedance 2.0 AI video generator without permission, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Disney said ByteDance had pre‑packaged Seedance with a pirated library of copyrighted characters from franchises including Star Wars and Marvel, portraying them as if they were public-domain clip art, the person said.

The letter alleges Seedance is reproducing, distributing and creating derivative works featuring Spider-Man, Darth Vader, and other characters, the person added.

ByteDance will strengthen safeguards on its Seedance 2.0 AI video tool to prevent the unauthorised use of copyrighted characters and celebrity likenesses, the Chinese firm told the BBC on Sunday.

ByteDance did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

Online news outlet Axios was the first to report on Disney’s move. Paramount Skydance has also sent a cease-and-desist letter to ByteDance, accusing the Chinese firm of engaging in “blatant infringement” of its intellectual property, Variety reported at the weekend.

Videos generated by Seedance 2.0, which was released last week, have gone viral in China including one of Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt in a fight. The AI model has been compared to DeepSeek and has been praised for its ability to produce cinematic storylines with just a few prompts.

Disney has taken similar actions against Character.AI, demanding that the startup immediately stop the unauthorised use of its copyrighted characters.

In December, Disney signed a licensing deal with OpenAI, letting the startup use characters from Star Wars, Pixar and Marvel franchises in its Sora video generator.

Dubai has lost one of its most important visual historians.

Veteran photographer Ramesh Shukla, widely regarded as the “royal photographer who chronicled the history of the UAE”, passed away on Sunday at the age of 87.

Shukla’s passing came after he suffered a cardiac arrest at Rashid Hospital in Dubai, his family confirmed. He is survived by his wife Tarun Shukla and son Neel Shukla.

For more than six decades, Shukla documented the UAE’s journey from its pre-union days to its emergence as a modern nation.

His lens captured some of the most defining moments in the country’s history, none more iconic than the image of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan signing the declaration that formed the UAE on December 2, 1971.

Taken at Union House on the day of federation, the photograph — along with Shukla’s equally famous Spirit of the Union image showing the founding leaders standing together beneath the UAE flag — has become embedded in the nation’s collective memory.

Both images now feature on the Dh50 banknote, cementing Shukla’s work as part of everyday life in the UAE.

Though “royal photographer” was never an official title, it was one bestowed on him by the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, in recognition of his unparalleled access to the country’s leadership and his role in documenting the formative years of the federation.

Speaking to local media, Shukla’s son Neel recalled a man whose life was defined by work, curiosity and relentless energy.

Despite battling heart problems over the past year, Shukla remained active until the very end.

“He wanted to work until the last day of his life,” Neel said. “Even yesterday, he was going through his photographs, writing and documenting.”

Born in India, Shukla moved to the Gulf in the 1960s and quickly established himself as a trusted chronicler of political, cultural and social life in the Emirates.

His archive spans decades of state visits, leadership moments and everyday scenes that together tell the story of a nation in motion.

His extensive collection is preserved and displayed at both the Zayed National Museum and the Etihad Museum, where his photographs serve as a visual record of the UAE’s early leadership and national milestones.

Shukla was honoured in November last year with the Lifetime Achievement Award at identity Design Awards 2025, organised by Motivate Media Group, recognising his more than six decades as an artist and storyteller.

Ian Fairservice, managing partner and group editor-in-chief of Motivate Media Group, paid tribute to Shukla’s legacy, at the event: “His timing could not be more extraordinary. The coastal sheikhdoms were developing at an astonishing rate and were shortly to join into the United Arab Emirates. Ramesh Shukla’s photographs now represent one of the most comprehensive photographic historical records of the country’s foundation and progress. They also capture the true spirit of the UAE and its people, providing a lasting record of life both then and now.

Starting in 1996, Shukla worked with Motivate Media Group over several years, during which time the company published 5 books in collaboration with him. All of those titles remain in print.

On learning of Shukla’s passing, Fairservice commented: “It was my pleasure to know Ramesh as a friend and colleague over so many years, and my thoughts and prayers today are with his family.”

Just months before his passing, the family met with HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, presenting Shukla’s photographs as a visual narrative of the UAE’s evolution.

Education departments across Saudi Arabia have approved revised school schedules for the upcoming holy month of Ramadan, introducing later start times to accommodate students and staff observing the fast.

In several regions, classes will begin at 9:00am, while others will start at 9:30am or 10:00am, according to a Saudi Gazette report.

Officials said the adjustments are aimed at fostering an appropriate learning environment during Ramadan, taking into account the spiritual atmosphere and altered daily routines that characterise the month.

Qassim Sets 10:00am start

The General Directorate of Education in the Qassim Region announced that the school day in public schools will begin at 10:00am. Adult education institutions will start earlier, at 9:30pm.

The directorate clarified that teaching and administrative staff must report 15 minutes before the first class period begins, ensuring a smooth start to the school day.

Makkah adjusts working hours

Similarly, the General Directorate of Education in the Makkah Region confirmed that morning schools will begin at 9:00am, while adult education classes will commence at 9:30pm.

The directorate added that official working hours for all employees during Ramadan will be limited to five hours per day, running from 10:00am to 3:00pm. The move, officials said, is intended to “ensure the continued efficiency of operations and the maintenance of administrative discipline throughout the month.”

Authorities emphasised that the revised schedule is designed to accommodate fasting conditions while maintaining academic standards.

“These arrangements are designed to accommodate the conditions of fasting while striking a careful balance between educational responsibilities and the observance of Ramadan,” the directorate stated.

School leaders have been urged to strictly adhere to the approved schedules and coordinate closely with the broader educational community to ensure smooth daily operations and high standards of discipline.

Riyadh, Eastern Province and beyond

In Riyadh, the Education Department announced that morning classes will begin at 9:00am, while continuing education schools will start at 9:00pm.

The Eastern Province and the Tabuk Region will implement slightly later starts, with school days commencing at 9:30am and continuing education classes beginning at 9:00pm.

In Al Baha Region, director General of Education Dr Abdulkhaliq Al Zahrani said public and private schools, as well as kindergartens, will open at 9:00am. Continuing education classes will begin at 9:00pm, and each class period during Ramadan will last 35 minutes.

Meanwhile, the General Directorate of Education in the Al Jouf Region announced that general education schools will start at 9:30am, with continuing education classes beginning promptly at 9:00pm. Officials stressed the importance of informing students of the revised schedules and adhering strictly to the announced timings.

Across the kingdom, education authorities say the unified objective remains clear: to support students’ spiritual commitments while ensuring learning continues without disruption.
