At the recent GITEX Global 2025, du once again demonstrated its technology leadership, showcasing how AI is shaping the present rather than just the future. In an interview with Gulf Business, Fahad Al Hassawi, CEO of du, outlines the company’s evolution into an “AI strategic partner” for enterprises, government entities, and the UAE at large.

du has been a consistent technology frontrunner at GITEX. What were this year’s headline innovations, particularly around AI, network evolution, and digital infrastructure that you unveiled at the event?

At GITEX Global 2025, du made a definitive statement about the present reality of AI with our theme: “AI’s not just the future. With us, it shapes your next step.” This positioning reflected du’s evolution from a traditional telecommunications provider into what we now call an “AI Strategic Partner” for enterprises, government entities, and the UAE.

Our headline innovation centred on a comprehensive four-layer technology stack that addresses a critical market gap where organisations struggle to fully integrate AI due to insufficient infrastructure. du’s unique value lies in end-to-end solution architecture, beginning with 5G+ connectivity as the foundation layer, moving through liquid-cooled data centres equipped with GPUs for AI workload consumption, advancing to our sovereign cloud platform that ensures data sovereignty and security, and culminating in the National Hybrid AI Platform that connects all these elements together.

du launched its AI Park and AI Factory initiatives, signalling a major step in operationalising AI. How are these initiatives designed to accelerate AI adoption across industries and what differentiates du’s approach from other telcos in the region?

The launch of du’s AI Park in Dubai marked a monumental step toward creating the UAE’s sovereign AI centre, featuring multiple liquid-cooled hyperscale data centres with a planned capacity of up to 1.5GW over time. The project extended beyond infrastructure development to include AI research laboratories, startup incubators, and a sovereign hybrid AI production cluster, creating an ecosystem where innovators could prototype, scale, and deploy solutions while maintaining full compliance with national security requirements. The five-year phased deployment plan demonstrated our commitment to building not just computational capacity but a full ecosystem.

Complementing this physical infrastructure was du’s AI Factory initiative, which showcased the practical application of human-AI collaboration across multiple industries. The exhibit featured humanoid robots, exoskeleton assistive technology, multi-arm collaborative robots with AI vision, and intelligent automation systems serving sectors from retail fulfilment to aviation catering. Real-world implementations with partners such as Union Coop, Unilever, and Emirates Post demonstrated how this hybrid workforce model enhances productivity while prioritising worker safety and maintaining human oversight in critical operations.

5.5G was becoming the next frontier in connectivity. How was du preparing its network for this evolution, and what new capabilities will it unlock for enterprises, cities, and consumers in the UAE?

du’s preparation for 5.5G technology centred on a state-of-the-art innovation centre inaugurated in 2024, which served as the testing ground for 5G Advanced technologies and next-generation capabilities. Our investment strategy reflected a clear prioritisation of emerging technologies, with the largest allocation directed towards network expansion and enhancement that forms the foundation for advanced services including smart cities, robotics, and industrial automation.

Strategic investments in cloud infrastructure, particularly the multi-billion dirham hyperscale project with Microsoft, positioned du to deliver sovereign cloud and AI capabilities tailored to government and enterprise customers.

The integration of AI into network operations represented another significant advancement, with generative AI and analytics embedded across customer experience platforms, network management systems, and new digital services. Internet of things capabilities remained a crucial enabler, particularly for logistics and utilities sectors, supported by the expanding 5G and edge infrastructure that enables real-time data processing and decision-making at unprecedented scale.

Walk us through du’s broader network roadmap — from 5G expansion and fibre rollout to edge and cloud integration. What were the near-term priorities and how did they align with the UAE’s digital transformation agenda?

The roadmap centred on aggressive 5G network enhancement, with substantial investments in expanding both coverage and capacity to meet exponentially growing demand across consumer, enterprise, and government sectors. This 5G expansion served as the foundational layer enabling advanced applications such as autonomous systems, real-time industrial automation, and immersive digital experiences requiring ultra-low latency and massive data throughput capabilities.

The integration of edge computing capabilities into this enhanced 5G infrastructure created a distributed network architecture that brought computational power closer to end users and devices, dramatically lowering latency while enabling real-time decision-making for critical applications. This edge-cloud integration strategy was crucial to supporting the UAE’s smart city initiatives, where traffic management systems, public-safety networks, and environmental monitoring require instantaneous data processing and response.

du’s approach ensured that cloud resources could be dynamically allocated based on geographic demand and specific application requirements, creating a more resilient and efficient digital infrastructure adapted to varying usage patterns.

Fundamental to du’s strategic vision was the evolution of digital services—particularly the enhancement of du pay and comprehensive B2C and B2B platforms leveraging the expanded network capabilities. The company’s focus on ICT initiatives encompassed cloud computing, AI, data centres, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies that collectively formed a comprehensive digital ecosystem. This integrated approach allowed du to offer enterprises complete digital-transformation solutions rather than individual technology components, addressing the complex needs of organisations seeking to modernise their operations while maintaining security and compliance.

With the growing importance of hybrid and multi-cloud environments, how is du building infrastructure that balances performance, scalability, and cybersecurity, particularly for government and enterprise clients?

du’s approach to cybersecurity and data sovereignty addressed the importance of hybrid and multi-cloud environments through development of the UAE’s first sovereign hypercloud. This National Hypercloud ensured that sensitive data and critical applications remained within the country’s borders.

The company’s Cybersecurity Defence Centre offered round-the-clock security monitoring and incident-response capabilities, utilising advanced technologies from IBM and Microsoft to detect and mitigate threats in real time.

The “Digital Trust” strategy covered multi-layered security services including risk management, compliance assurance, and infrastructure protection across cloud environments. du’s Oracle Alloy platform enabled operation and customisation of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure services from local data centres, while GPU-as-a-Service capabilities delivered through partnerships with Oracle and NVIDIA accelerated AI development for government and public-sector clients.

The expanding network of hyper-connected, secure data centres in locations including Dubai Silicon Oasis and Kizad in Abu Dhabi provided the redundant infrastructure required for mission-critical operations.

du has been expanding its partnerships with global technology leaders and hyperscalers. What role did these alliances play in advancing du’s AI, cloud, and 5.5G ambitions — and how did they feed into the broader innovation ecosystem in the UAE?

du’s transformation from connectivity provider to ecosystem enabler became evident through strategic partnerships with government entities, innovation hubs, and startup accelerators. Collaborations with the Department of Economy and Tourism, Ignyte, Sher’aa, and the Abu Dhabi Business Women Council created platforms that empowered SMEs to innovate and scale operations.

These partnerships directly supported the UAE’s ambitious target of achieving over 2 million SMEs by 2031 while positioning the nation as a global startup capital.

The company’s role went beyond infrastructure provision to include startup development programmes and strategic alliances that bridged public-policy objectives with private-sector execution. Through investments in AI, cloud services, and comprehensive digital platforms, du enabled emerging businesses to access enterprise-grade technology solutions previously available only to large corporations —democratising innovation and contributing to high-value economic activity across diverse sectors.

Sustainability remained a strategic pillar for du. How did you integrate energy efficiency, smart infrastructure, and sustainable practices into your network design — and what was your long-term vision for a greener, AI-powered network?

du’s sustainability strategy integrated environmental stewardship with technological advancement through three core pillars: enhancing community wellbeing, operating with ethical responsibility, and ensuring universal access to digital-services benefits. The company’s commitment to net-zero operations aligned with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 initiative, while its liquid-cooled data-centre technology demonstrated how advanced infrastructure can be both powerful and environmentally conscious.

Strategic investments in digital talent-development through partnerships and training programmes ensured that the UAE’s workforce could fully leverage the AI and digital-transformation opportunities that du’s infrastructure enables.

Looking ahead to 2025 and beyond, du’s roadmap emphasised continued 5G network enhancement, expanded digital services including its du pay platform, and deeper integration of ICT initiatives spanning cloud computing, AI, data centres, and cybersecurity.

This comprehensive approach positioned du not merely as a technology provider but as a fundamental enabler of the UAE’s digital-transformation agenda, where cutting-edge infrastructure meets national strategic objectives to create sustainable, inclusive economic growth powered by AI and advanced connectivity solutions.

The Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), in collaboration with the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility)—an affiliate of the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT)—and Abu Dhabi Airports (ADA), has announced the launch of the emirate’s first vertiport network to enable the deployment of advanced air mobility solutions. The initiative marks a major milestone in Abu Dhabi’s leadership in smart, sustainable, and future-ready transport systems.

Part of the Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industries (SAVI) cluster, the initiative aligns with Abu Dhabi’s broader strategy to drive innovation-led economic diversification. The planned vertiport infrastructure will support the operation of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, facilitating seamless, low-emission air travel and reinforcing the emirate’s position as a global pioneer in next-generation mobility.

The network will include more than 10 state-of-the-art vertiports integrated into Abu Dhabi’s multimodal transport ecosystem. Zayed International Airport and Al Bateen Executive Airport have been confirmed as key locations within the network, with additional sites and intercity routes to be announced in upcoming phases. Abu Dhabi Airports has been appointed as the anchor investor and primary delivery partner, while the GCAA and Abu Dhabi Mobility will guide regulatory, operational, and safety frameworks to ensure compliance with global aviation and sustainability standards.

The network will connect major business, residential, and tourism hubs—including Zayed International Airport, Al Bateen Executive Airport, Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, and Abu Dhabi Island—creating a seamless air transport corridor across the emirate. Each vertiport will feature integrated ground and digital infrastructure, enabling efficient multimodal travel through the transport systems managed by Abu Dhabi Mobility and the airport network.

His Excellency Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the GCAA, said: “This step in Abu Dhabi builds upon the ongoing efforts of the General Civil Aviation Authority to align the nation’s aviation infrastructure with the UAE’s strategic vision of adopting an advanced and sustainable air mobility ecosystem. In line with its regulatory and legislative mandate, the GCAA has developed modern regulatory frameworks that enable the integration of eVTOL aircraft into the civil aviation system, while also facilitating the adaptation of existing heliports as part of a comprehensive infrastructure that supports advanced air mobility solutions.

“What we are witnessing today marks the beginning of a new era, one that reflects a qualitative leap in aviation infrastructure and reaffirms the UAE’s commitment to leading the global shift towards smarter and more sustainable mobility. In collaboration with its partners, the GCAA continues to spearhead this transformation by fostering a flexible and forward-looking regulatory environment that positions the UAE among the first countries worldwide to operate advanced air mobility systems at scale.”

His Excellency Badr Al-Olama, Director-General of ADIO, said: “This strategic initiative places Abu Dhabi at the forefront of next-generation mobility, exemplifying the power of partnerships between Abu Dhabi Government and the private sector in accelerating future industries. Airlines canceled more than 1,500 US flights on Monday, the fourth consecutive day cancellations have topped 1,000 as government flight cuts and air traffic staffing absences continue to wreak havoc with aviation.

FlightAware, a flight tracking website, said by 8:30am ET (1330 GMT), more than 1,550 flights had been canceled and 1,400 delayed Monday after 2,950 flights were canceled and nearly 10,800 delayed Sunday in the single worst day for flight disruptions since the government shutdown began on October 1.

A November winter storm in Chicago also disrupting air travel.

The Federal Aviation Administration late Sunday said it was suspending general aviation traffic at 12 airports with air traffic control staffing issues including Chicago O’Hare and Reagan Washington National. The shutdown, which has reached a record 40 days, has led to shortages of air traffic controllers who, like other federal employees, have not been paid for weeks.

The US Senate voted to advance a bill to end the government shutdown late on Sunday.

The FAA instructed airlines to cut 4 per cent of daily flights starting on Friday at 40 major airports because of air traffic control safety concerns. Reductions in flights are mandated to reach 6 per cent on Tuesday and then hit 10 per cent by November 14. One big question for airlines is when will the FAA lift the government-required flight cuts. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has said he first wants to see air traffic control staffing and safety data improve.

Kuwait eyes large-scale battery storage to ease power crisis

Kuwait is negotiating a major battery storage project with a discharge capacity of up to 1.5 gigawatts and total energy storage of between 4 and 6 gigawatt-hours, in a bid to ease chronic power shortages, a senior electricity ministry official said on Monday.

The Gulf state, a major oil producer and OPEC member, has been grappling with severe electricity shortages driven by rapid population growth, urban expansion, rising temperatures and delays in plant maintenance.

The strain has forced authorities to impose planned power cuts in some areas since last year.

“It is still in the negotiation phase … the picture is becoming clearer and we may soon have an outcome from it,” Adel Al Zamil told reporters, refusing to specify the parties with whom negotiations are taking place.

The battery storage initiative is part of a broader push to stabilise Kuwait’s grid and reduce reliance on fossil fuels during peak demand periods. If implemented, it would mark one of the largest energy storage deployments in the region.

Both the Al Khairan power plant and the first phase of the Shagaya renewable energy project, with a combined planned capacity of around 2.9 gigawatts, are expected to be awarded in the second half of 2026, Al Zamil said.

The Public-Private Partnership Authority invited bids in September for the first phase of Al Khairan, which will contribute at least 1.8 gigawatts. The first phase of Shagaya, with a planned capacity of 1,100 megawatts, has completed its pre-qualification stage.

Nearly three-quarters of UAE residents believe that greater awareness and education around the ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) is necessary, according to a new survey by De Montfort University (DMU) Dubai. The study comes at a time when AI adoption is accelerating across both professional and personal domains in the UAE, reflecting the country’s ambition to become a global hub for technology and innovation.

The survey reveals that AI is no longer a peripheral tool, it has become deeply embedded in everyday life and professional workflows. Over 60 per cent of respondents said they frequently use AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, or Copilot for learning, problem-solving, or work-related tasks, demonstrating that generative AI has already entered mainstream adoption. Yet, despite its increasing utility, a significant 72 per cent of UAE residents agreed that more education and awareness on AI are essential, highlighting a widespread recognition of the need to balance technological adoption with understanding and ethical use.

This combination of widespread adoption and strong demand for ethical education underscores the role of institutions such as DMU Dubai, which seek to prepare students and residents not only to use AI but to understand it responsibly.

The survey also highlighted an age-related confidence gap among residents regarding entering the workforce. Among residents aged 18–24, only 44 per cent felt confident about entering the workforce, compared with 59 per cent of respondents overall. This suggests that, despite the growing presence of AI tools that could support learning and productivity, young people still feel underprepared to navigate a job market increasingly shaped by technological change.

Professor Shushma Patel, DMU Dubai’s pro vice-chancellor for Artificial Intelligence, emphasised the importance of AI education in bridging this gap:

“Of all the technological breakthroughs we have seen in the past 50 years, nothing matches the power and potential of AI. As industries race to exploit this potential it is vital universities stay on the front foot, ensuring their students master these skills responsibly, aware of the ethical implications of the technology while embracing the innovation it can yield.”

Her statement underscores a key challenge: technological capability alone is insufficient. Students and professionals need not only technical skills but also a deep understanding of ethical considerations, societal impact, and responsible application.

DMU Dubai’s innovative approach to AI education

DMU Dubai has taken proactive steps to ensure that graduates are prepared for an AI-driven workforce. The university integrates generative AI software directly into teaching and learning, giving students hands-on experience while simultaneously emphasising ethical and societal implications. This approach reflects a broader educational philosophy: students should not only know how to use AI, but also understand why responsible usage is critical.

The university recently inaugurated a new 85,000 square foot campus in Dubai Internet City, situating itself in proximity to major global technology firms such as Google, HP, LinkedIn, Microsoft, and Meta. Hosting approximately 3,000 students, the campus exemplifies DMU Dubai’s strategy of combining academic rigour with exposure to real-world industry practices.

Simon Bradbury, pro vice-chancellor International at DMU, explained the philosophy behind the university’s curriculum:

“While most universities are asking ‘how do we add AI to our curriculum?’, we’re asking a different question: ‘In a world where AI knows everything, what makes a DMU Dubai graduate uniquely valuable?’ The answer is deeper capability. Our block teaching model allows students to master one subject at a time, building genuine expertise rather than surface-level awareness. They learn to wield AI as a powerful tool while developing the creativity, critical thinking, and cross-cultural collaboration skills that no algorithm can replicate. That’s building career resilience for the future.”

The block teaching model: Depth over breadth

A distinctive feature of DMU Dubai is its block teaching model, the only one of its kind in the region. In this system, students focus on a single subject at a time and complete assessments at the end of each block. This contrasts sharply with traditional multi-subject teaching methods, where students juggle multiple modules simultaneously, often resulting in fragmented understanding.

According to the survey, 52 per cent of respondents viewed block teaching as more effective than conventional teaching, suggesting that a focused approach resonates with learners. By concentrating on one subject, students have more time to internalise material, critically analyse AI applications, and develop practical skills. The block system also allows more opportunities for ethical reflection, collaboration, and project-based learning, all vital for AI literacy.

This methodology reinforces DMU Dubai’s philosophy: students should graduate with deep, transferable skills rather than superficial familiarity with a wide range of topics. This depth of expertise becomes particularly valuable in an AI-driven economy, where the ability to critically interpret and ethically apply technology is paramount.

Shifting perceptions: From AI curiosity to ethical reflection

The DMU Dubai survey also explored how residents perceive AI in daily life. While 67 per cent said AI tools make life easier, nearly half of respondents (47 per cent) expressed concerns that over-reliance on AI could weaken learning and critical thinking. This tension reflects a broader societal conversation: while AI offers remarkable efficiency, it also demands responsible engagement.

Simon Bradbury observed:

“The evolution from fascination to reflection marks a critical stage in society’s relationship with technology. We are moving beyond excitement about what AI can do toward a deeper understanding of what it should do. That awareness demands ethical frameworks, empathy, and accountability, qualities best nurtured within universities. At DMU Dubai, our close ties with industry ensure these conversations happen where innovation is unfolding.”

The survey findings suggest that residents are not only users of AI but also thoughtful evaluators of its impact. The recognition of potential risks alongside benefits underscores the importance of embedding ethics into both education and workplace practices.

Preparing graduates for an AI-driven economy

The rapid adoption of AI technologies has blurred traditional career paths, leaving young people uncertain about which skills will remain valuable in the long term. Professor Patel explained:

“This combination of industry input and academic innovation empowers graduates to step into the market with confidence and relevance. Our academic research feeds directly into classroom learning, giving students access to the latest insights on how technology and human potential intersect.”

DMU Dubai emphasises human-centric skills, such as creativity, empathy, and ethical reasoning, while also nurturing digital fluency. Students learn to complement AI tools rather than be replaced by them, equipping them for a workforce in which uniquely human abilities remain critical.

Simon Bradbury elaborated:

“Students graduate not only with technical skill but with the discernment to guide AI’s integration responsibly. This mindset, thoughtful, values-driven, and collaborative, is what will ultimately define progress in the AI era.”

The university’s approach ensures that graduates are prepared to navigate complex technological landscapes with both competence and conscience.

Public trust and AI policy in the UAE

The DMU Dubai survey reflects broader trends in public perception. While AI adoption is high, there is a clear demand for governance and ethical frameworks. A separate report by KPMG, Trust in Artificial Intelligence Insights, underscores these findings. Key highlights include:

  • 89 per cent of UAE respondents said they had experienced the benefits of AI, exceeding the global average of 83 per cent.
  • 97 per cent reported using AI for work, study, or personal purposes, showing deep integration of AI into daily life.
  • 66 per cent of respondents said their organisation had a policy on generative AI, indicating growing awareness of governance requirements.

Matin Jouzdani, partner at KPMG Lower Gulf, emphasised the need for balance:

“AI is rapidly changing the way we live and work. Our research reinforces an overwhelming acceptance of AI in the UAE, but there is also strong public support for appropriate AI regulation. By implementing a strategy that combines AI training and literacy alongside responsible AI governance frameworks, organisations will be able to confidently capture the benefits of AI in a way that doesn’t slow down innovation.”

These findings illustrate that while residents are eager to embrace AI, they also want guardrails and guidance to ensure responsible usage.

Balancing risk and opportunity

AI adoption is not without risks. Challenges include transparency, fairness, sustainability, and reliability. Samantha Gloede, Global Trusted AI Transformation leader at KPMG, stated:

“Managing this complex ecosystem requires a careful balance, making sure that strong systemic controls are in place around AI while keeping humans actively involved and engaging with the system ethically and responsibly. The KPMG report highlights the UAE as a leader in AI adoption and governance:

  • 68 per cent of respondents were satisfied with current AI regulations, higher than the global average of 43 per cent.
  • There is strong agreement on the need for stronger safeguards around AI-generated misinformation.
