The UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) is tracking Cyclone Tej which has formed off the coast of Oman.

It warned that the UAE would see some effects caused by the tropical storm. Although Tej had formed into a category 3 cyclone, it has been downgraded to a category 1 on Monday.

UAE to see ‘indirect effect’ of cyclone

The NCM said the indirect effect of the cyclone on the country will see a flow of moisture from the Arabian Sea on the eastern and southern parts of the country, leading to possible rain.

The authority issued orange and yellow alerts in parts of Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah on October 22 as the areas were expected to see some rain over the next 24 hours.

Several videos of the rain occurring near South Shoka (an area near the Oman border) and other mountainous regions were shared by the official UAE weather page.

The NCM, in its latest on Twitter, said the sea conditions currently in the Oman Sea and the Arabian Gulf were ‘slight to moderate’.

Impact on Oman

Authorities in Oman have announced two days of holiday for public and private sectors in the Dhofar Governate and the wilayat of Al Jazir in Al Wusta governorate due to Cyclone Tej.

Oman’s Salalah port will be also temporarily shut down starting on Sunday at 5pm.
