The world’s top leaders have descended on the Swiss town of Davos, as the World Economic Forum hosts its first in-person annual meeting after a two-year hiatus.

This event which takes place from May 22 to May 26, is attended by 2,500 global leaders and executives, 100 Global Innovators and Technology Pioneers and 50 heads of state and government.

The agenda this year is centered around the theme ‘History at a Turning Point: Government Policies and Business Strategies’. Some issues to be discussed include recovery from the global pandemic, the Ukraine crisis, rampant inflation, tumbling stock markets and climate change.

“Davos will be different, but not mainly because of the lack of snow but because of lack of global co-operation to solve these most pressing challenges. Global challenges need global solutions, and we’re not seeing these global solutions and that’s where we have to push at Davos,” said Børge Brende, President of the WEF.

He added that they are also sending a strong signal to Moscow by not inviting Russian officials and businesses to this year’s Davos summit while issuing an invitation to the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to address the gathering.

The climate crisis will be one of the top talking points. The panels will range from combating ‘eco-anxiety’ to helping debt-ridden countries finance a renewable transition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Ukrainian crisis will loom large raising two central questions: How should countries respond to energy shocks from being cut off from Russian oil and gas? And will the war hasten the transition to renewable energies or help fossil fuel companies maintain the status quo?

With regards to the pandemic, the discussions will no doubt turn to humanity’s preparedness for future events with potential announcements on vaccine equity and how best to monitor the potential for future pandemics.
