Stormy weather will persist across the UAE this weekend, with heavy rain, hail and even snow expected in the next few days, the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has said.

Several parts of the country including Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah witnessed heavy rainfall on Thursday, with certain areas such as Dhafra also experiencing hailstorms.

“The country will be affected by unstable weather conditions from Thursday, as a result of the presence of an upper air trough from the west, accompanied by a cold air mass with a surface trough from the Red Sea”, the the NCM said in its daily bulletin.

Along with rainfall, the NCM said blowing dust and sand due to moderate winds will cause visibility to drop. It also warned of rough seas.

The UAE will continue to witness “unstable weather and rainfall of different intensity” accompanied with lightning and thunder during the weekend, the NCM forecast. It also cautioned about the possibility of flash floods in certain regions.

Winds speeds could reach up to 70km/hr, causing poor visibility on the roads. The sea will be rough to very rough by night in the Arabian Gulf and in Oman Sea.

The weather conditions are expected to ease a bit by Sunday, with a “significant decrease in temperatures, and a probability of some freezing rain or snow over the mountain peaks”, the NCM said.

The Abu Dhabi Municipality urged the public to be cautious due to the unstable weather conditions.
