The masterplan of the upcoming Expo 2020 Dubai was revealed this week at the Arab Media Forum, explaining the overall structure of the massive site.

The exhibition area within the 438-hectare site in Jebel Ali will include a 2 sqkm Al Wasl meeting plaza at the centre which will branch outwards into pavilions under the three sub-themes of ‘opportunity, mobility and sustainability’. The overall project will also feature an Expo village – to provide housing to staff.

The site will be linked to airports and will also include a dedicated transport network.

Running for six months from October 2020 to April 2021, the mega Expo event is anticipated to welcome 25 million visitors from around 180 countries.

Director general of Expo 2020 Dubai and UAE minister of state for International Cooperation Reem Al Hashemi said the masterplan will help all those involved with the event to understand what the site will offer with regards to specific attractions, services, amenities and design.

“We strive to make Expo 2020 Dubai a comprehensive experience that begins from now until the end of its activities in 2021. Its impact will last long to benefit future generations for decades to come.”

Senior vice president of Real Estate Development at Expo 2020 Dubai Ahmed Al Khateeb confirmed that work is ongoing as per the schedule on the event site.

Earlier this month it was announced that Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava won the design competition for the UAE pavilion at the Expo.

Calatrava’s design, inspired by a falcon in flight, beat competition from 10 other designs, with nine of the world’s top firms represented.

The UAE pavilion is expected to cover up to 15,000 square metres and will include numerous exhibition areas, an auditorium, food and beverage outlets and VIP lounges.

“The UAE pavilion will become an important cornerstone in our site and will have a legacy plan that will reflect our hopes and ambitions for the many years to come,” added Al Hashemi.
