Ride-hailing firm Uber has announced a new fare structure in Dubai that will see some trips become more expensive.

What’s On reports that changes are being made to base, per-minute and per-kilometre rates as well as the company’s booking fee on UberSELECT and UberVIP trips.

The company said in an email that this would result in “higher fares on some trips, while fares will be lower on other trips”.

Base fares will change from Dhs8 to Dhs5.4, Dhs6.7 or Dhs10.6 based on the time and day of the week.

The per kilometer rate will rise from Dhs1.83 to Dhs2.25 but the time rate will decrease from Dhs0.5 to Dhs0.25 a minute.

Waiting charges will remain the same at Dhs0.5 a minute and the minimum fare will decrease from Dhs17 to Dhs15, excluding booking fees.

What’s On said its calculations showed passengers on a 6km or 10-minute journey from Dubai Media City to Dubai Marina would pay from Dhs27.9 to Dhs33.1 on a journey that previously would cost Dhs28.48.

This indicates that fares will be mostly higher rather than lower than previously.

Uber previously increased its prices in the UAE and Saudi Arabia in January following the introduction of a 5 per cent value added tax rate in both countries.
