Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE’s vice president and prime minister and Dubai’s ruler, urged the country’s new government “to maximise their efforts” to address important national issues.
Speaking at the first meeting of the new cabinet, Sheikh Mohammed said: “Expectations are great, trust in you is high, the priorities are crystal clear and the people of UAE deserve the best.”
He also instructed the ministers to work as one team, setting the improvement of government services as the first priority of the ministries, official news agency WAM reported.
“The success of the government will be measured by the society and satisfaction of people is an end that can be realised … the homeland will only make progress when tremendous challenges have been addressed and met,” WAM quoted Sheikh Mohammed as saying.
The UAE government announced a cabinet reshuffle earlier this month, which included four new ministers, a new ministry and some ministerial portfolio changes.
As part of the reshuffle, Suhail Bin Mohammed al-Mazroui was appointed as the country’s new energy minister, replacing Mohammed al-Hamli. Other new ministers include Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, the CEO of clean energy company Masdar, Abdullah Bin Mohammed Ghobash and Abdullah Belhaif Al Nuaimi.
Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, the former foreign trade minister was appointed as the Minister of Development and International Cooperation, and Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the former higher education and scientific research minister has become the Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development.
“The homeland will never forget dedication of its loyal children nor the marks they left on its development drive. The expertise that accumulated over the years will be a reliable asset for the nation which can be used in the service of the nation through new fields and roles,” Sheikh Mohammed said.
During Sunday’s session, the cabinet also approved Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan as chairman of the General Authority for Youth and Sports Welfare and head of the National Council of Tourism and Antiquities.
Public works minister Dr. Abdullah Al Nuaimi was confirmed as chairman of the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme and of the National Transport Authority, and energy minister Suhail Mohammed al-Mazroui was appointed chairman of the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (FEWA).
The cabinet also approved the formation of a temporary committee to create a strategy for development of the telecommunications sector within one year. The committee, headed by Ahmed Al Humairi, will report to the cabinet, reported WAM.
