Sharjah extends suspension of all social and sports events

Sharjah has extended the suspension of all social and sports events in the emirate until the end of May, it was announced on Monday.

The order covers gatherings in wedding halls, event halls, hotels, and government and community facilities, official news agency WAM reported.

The decision was announced by the Sharjah Executive Council and comes as part of the precautionary and preventive measures to control the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

The report also confirmed that the suspension could be extended further, depending on the situation.

Sharjah previously announced that malls, salons, restaurants and cafeterias could be reopened from Sunday, May 3.

However, they have to adhere to requirements such as limiting occupancy to 30 per cent of the capacity and ensuring social distancing.

The UAE reported 564 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday, after an additional 26,000 screenings were conducted across the country.

With the newly diagnosed cases, the total number of infections has now risen to 14,163. The death toll in the country due to teh virus has risen to 126.

While the UAE has allowed certain sectors of the economy to reopen, including malls and offices, they still have to adhere to safety guidelines.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai has instructed officials to develop a post Covid-19 development strategy for both the short-term and the long-term in order to reactivate economic activity across the country.
