Former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, has been named the head of the Conservative Party and the new Prime Minister of the UK.

Sunak, 42 years of age, is the first politician of Indian origin to secure UK’s top job and the youngest British Prime Minister in over 200 years.

He succeeds Liz Truss who resigned last week after serving just 45 days in office, making her the shortest-ruling Prime Minister in British history.

Sunak announced he would enter the race to find Truss’ replacement as leader of the Conservative Party, securing the support of Tories such as Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch as well as Tom Tugendhat and Sajid Javid.

“I want to fix our economy, unite our party and deliver for our country,” Sunak said in a tweet on Sunday, October 27, when he announced he would stand in the contest to replace her.

Sunak will meet King Charles III before entering 10 Downing Street as the country’s premier.
