World Cup 2014, iPhone 6 and Malaysian Airlines top Google 2014 trending searches in the UAE.

UAE internet users have shown interest about diverse topics over the last year with the top trending searches featuring people, movies, games, events and hottest trends, according to Google’s annual year in search report.

The most searched queries in Google in the UAE were World Cup 2014, iPhone 6 and Malaysian Airlines.

Some of the personalities featured in the top trending searches in the Emirates were deceased Hollywood actor Robin Williams and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Events such as Ramadan and Diwali were also part of top trending searches.

Google also released a separate list of the UAE’s trending people, events, movies and local brands.

World Cup 2014, Malaysia Airlines flight MH 370 disappearance and Ramadan constituted the top trending event searches this year while Frozen and Interstellar topped the list of trending movies in the UAE.

Meanwhile, e-commerce websites and airlines dominated the list of most searched local brands in the country. Website Dubizzle and e-commerce site Souq were the most searched local brands, followed by airlines Emirates and Air Arabia, Google said.

Globally, the most trending search topics were about Robin Williams, World Cup, Ebola, Malaysian Airlines and ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

“It was a year in which we were struck by the death of a beloved comedian, and watched news unfold about a horrific plane crash and a terrifying disease,” said Amit Singhal, VP of search, Google.

“We were captivated by the beautiful game, and had fun with birds, a bucket of ice, and a frozen princess.”
