Qatargas rebrands to QatarEnergy LNG

Qatargas has changed its name to “QatarEnergy LNG”, the parent company QatarEnergy said, adding that the rebranding underscores a future vision for the country’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry.

The state-owned energy firm said the rebranding, comes as part of the increasing international recognition of Qatar’s role in meeting the world’s growing need for energy, particularly natural gas – the cleanest of all fossil fuels.

Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs, the president and CEO of QatarEnergy, said the name change is a historic evolution that is reshaping the country’s energy industry.

It also reflects the company’s continued commitment to LNG as a critical source of energy for decades to come and a vital enabler of the energy transition.

“Over the past 39 years, Qatargas has been a pioneer of the LNG industry helping place Qatar firmly on the global LNG map and enhancing its leading position as a safe, reliable and trustworthy LNG supplier,” said Al-Kaab.

With a new name and logo, QatarEnergy LNG pledged to continue delivering on its commitment to safety, environmental protection, flawless project delivery and the reliability and efficiency of its production facilities.

Founded in 1984 as Qatargas, QatarEnergy LNG currently operates 14 LNG production trains and is central to QatarEnergy’s efforts to raise the Gulf state’s LNG production capacity.

QatarEnergy’s massive global portfolio

Meanwhile, the competition for LNG since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, with Europe, in particular, needing vast amounts to help replace Russian piped gas that used to make up almost 40 per cent of the continent’s imports, according to Reuters.

Qatar has benefited from surging gas prices and QatarEnergy’s North Field Expansion Project is part of the country’s broader strategy to boost LNG production capacity from 77 million tons per annum (mtpa) to 126 mtpa by 2027.

The energy firm took over all the marketing and related activities currently managed by Qatargas in February to further strengthen Qatar’s global LNG offering. The move is also aimed at providing a unified customer and stakeholder interface with greater value.

Last year, the company signed deals with Exxon, TotalEnergies, Shell, Eni and ConocoPhillips as partners in the $30bn expansion of its LNG production also known as the NFS project.

It has been picking up exploration blocks in basins including Guyana, Namibia, South Africa and Cyprus from companies including TotalEnergies, Shell and Exxon as the energy major seeks to diversify internationally.

QatarEnergy also signed a 27-year deal to supply China’s Sinopec with liquefied natural gas in November 2022, in what is the longest LNG agreement to date.
