Kuwaiti security authorities intercepted a package at the airport reportedly containing unidentified “dangerous substances” believed to be “explosives”, local media reported during the weekend.

The suspicious package – in the shape of a book – was being sent to the US capital Washington, a security source told Aljarida newspaper.

Customs officers were alerted during a routine cargo check, according to the interior ministry.

Special teams screened the package using thermal devices and found batteries, an explosive paste and TNT placed inside the hollowed-out, the newspaper report said.

The parcel was allegedly being sent via courier to a military office in the US.

The interior ministry is conducting an investigation and is awaiting results from forensics to gather more details about the incident.
