Carlos Slim Helu

Carlos Slim was the world’s richest man from 2010 to 2013 but has since seen his wealth fall. He is now the fifth richest in the world, according to Forbes, having lost almost $22bn last year due to the decreasing value of his shares in tel- ecoms giant America Movil. Despite this,the tycoon, born in Mexico to Lebanese parents, still has an estimated fortune of $55bn and commands 300 million telecoms subscribers across 19 countries. Last year he made headlines after a tel- evision company he owns cut ties with United States presidential hopeful Donald Trump due to his derogatory comments towards Mexicans. On the business side of things he also increased his stake in The New York Times from 7 per cent to 17 per cent and acquired a number of prime commercial buildings in the United States via Grupo Carso.
