Kuwait’s National Real Estate Company (NREC) has appointed RTKL as design consultant for the stalled Reem Mall project in Abu Dhabi.

Construction of the $1 billion mall, comprising of 450 stores, 85 restaurants and family entertainment offerings, will start in 2015, with a launch date set for 2018, according to NREC.

The ambitious project, on the southern coast of Reem Island, was announced in 2008 but progress halted during the financial crisis.

NREC said RTKL’s design would include new concepts that will be finalised shortly, incorporating “natural elements of the region and its history”.

The company has outlined plans to include brands new to the Middle East and some of the largest hypermarket space in the region.

“The Reem Mall will feature a fresh take on retail in Abu Dhabi. The concept combines local and global influences to create a design that will serve as a centerpiece for the entire community,” said Nick Guy, associate director at RTKL.

RTKL’s previous projects include Bahrain City Centre, Kuwait’s 360 Mall and Mirdif City Centre.
