The Indian government will allow the export of rice to the UAE. This exception to the export ban was made by the Indian government for a pre-determined quantity of non-basmati white rice.

According to the notification by India’s Directorate General of Foreign Trade on Monday evening, the UAE will receive to the tune of 75,000 tonnes of rice.

Exception to India’s rice export ban

The exports to UAE have been permitted through National Cooperative Exports Limited.

“Export of 75,000 MT of Non-Basmati White Rice (under HS code 1006 30 90) to UAE is permitted through NCEL,” read the the Directorate General of Foreign Trade notification.

The announcement of the rice export to the UAE comes almost two months after the Indian government placed a ban on the export of non-basmati white rice to check domestic grain prices and ensure domestic food security. India is the world’s largest exporter rice and contributes upto 40 per cent to the global supply.

Last week, Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) Santosh Kumar Sarangi told PTI, “The Government of India has committed that in case of food insecure, vulnerable countries and neighbouring countries request, it will provide the required quantity of rice or wheat.”
