Dubai has unveiled plans to simplify medical visa procedures for international patients through a new partnership between the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA Dubai) and the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), as the emirate seeks to strengthen its position as a global destination for health tourism.
The two entities signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at creating a more integrated patient journey by linking visa, residency and healthcare services from the pre-arrival stage through treatment and follow-up care.
The agreement was signed by lieutenant general Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, DG of GDRFA Dubai, and Dr Alawi AlSheikh-Ali, director general of the Dubai Health Authority.
Under the agreement, the two entities will work to facilitate medical visa procedures, support health tourism initiatives and strengthen integration between healthcare, immigration and health insurance systems.
A key component of the partnership is enhanced digital integration between the systems of GDRFA Dubai and DHA, allowing healthcare providers to process medical visa applications more efficiently for patients travelling to Dubai from overseas.
The agreement also includes the development of joint mechanisms that will enable members of the Dubai Health Experience (DXH) network to submit medical visa applications on behalf of international patients more efficiently.
The partnership lays the foundation for future initiatives, including the development of a smart medical visa and additional services designed to improve the patient experience and reinforce Dubai’s competitiveness in the global health tourism market.
Current medical visa rules
Under Dubai’s current regulations, patients travelling to the emirate for treatment must be sponsored by a licenced healthcare facility in the UAE. Medical visas are available for 90-day and 180-day periods, with single-entry and multiple-entry options depending on treatment requirements. Escort visas may also be issued for accompanying family members or caregivers.
Applications are submitted by the sponsoring healthcare facility through GDRFA Dubai’s approved channels and require supporting documents, including a valid passport, photograph and medical report.
The latest initiative is expected to streamline administrative procedures for international patients while supporting the continued growth of Dubai’s health tourism sector.
