An Emirates Airbus A380 bound for Dubai from London Heathrow was forced to turn back mid-air on New Year’s Eve after the crew reported a technical issue shortly after departure.
The superjumbo, operating as flight EK002, departed Heathrow just after 14:30 UTC on December 31, 2025 but began experiencing a landing gear system anomaly shortly after take-off, prompting the flight crew to elect an immediate precautionary return to London.
Flight tracking
According to flight tracking data and airline statements, the aircraft remained airborne for nearly 90 to 120 minutes as it entered a holding pattern over southeast London to burn off excess fuel and reach a safe landing weight — standard practice for long-haul aircraft returning soon after take-off when heavily fuelled. Observers on the ground reported seeing the A380 circle at about 10,000 feet with the landing gear visibly extended before it touched down safely back at Heathrow’s Runway 27R at around 16:28–16:28 UTC.
Emirates confirmed that all passengers and crew disembarked safely and that the aircraft was taken out of service for detailed inspection by engineering teams. The airline also apologised for the disruption and is working to rebook affected passengers on subsequent services, with hotel accommodation offered where required.
The aircraft involved — an Airbus A380-800 registered as A6-EUF — is nine years old and part of Emirates’ large A380 fleet, a key pillar of its long-haul operations linking Dubai with major global hubs like London.
The incident drew real-time attention online, with tracking platforms ranking EK002 among the most-followed flights globally during the diversion, highlighting how aviation enthusiasts and travellers alike follow high-profile routes in real time.
