The organisers of the Emirates Dubai 7s rugby tournament have announced that the 2021 edition taking place on December 2-4 will be part of a rescheduled HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series for 2021.

While the Emirates Dubai 7s usually marks the beginning of the HSBC Rugby Sevens Series, this year the 2021 season will start instead in May and extend through to December.

The 2021 Series will begin with back-to-back women’s events in Marcoussis, Paris, on May 15-16 and May 22-23.

The Series will then take a break for the countdown to the Olympic Games and recommence with a men’s event in Singapore on October 29-30, followed by joint men’s and women’s rounds in Hong Kong on November 5-7 , and in Dubai on December 2-4, followed by a finale in Cape Town on December 10-12.

Discussions are continuing with London and Vancouver on the viability of hosting men’s events following the Olympic Games and before the Singapore leg in October.

Dubai will host both the men and women’s competitions, as in previous years, but both tournaments will take place on pitch one and pitch two for the first time since the inception of the Women’s Series.

“We are hugely excited to take our place on the rescheduled 2021 season. The Emirates Dubai 7s will be a celebration of sports and entertainment with players and spectators travelling from all over the world to attend. It is now less than nine months until the kick-off of what will be our greatest ever show,” said Emirates Dubai 7s tournament director Tom Burwell.

The Emirates Dubai 7s Invitational tournament opened for team registrations on March 1.

Tickets for this year’s event will go on sale on September 1, with organisers confirming that the weekend ticket will be priced at its cheapest ever.

The 2020 edition of the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens tournament which was scheduled to be held from November 26-28, 2020, was – for the first time in its 51-year-history, since its inception in 1970 – cancelled as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Since 1999, the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens has been a part of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series. The Dubai 7s is the only tournament globally that has featured on every year of both the men’s and women’s HSBC World Rugby World Series.
