Abu Dhabi has announced that fines on violations of regulations pertinent to bicycles and electric bikes for individual use has been put into effect.

Non-compliance of regulation will result in fines between Dhs200 to Dhs500 for each the following: failure to adhere to safety instructions and standards, or violations related to riding bicycles in prohibited roads and areas, Abu Dhabi Government Media Office reported.

The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) of the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) in Abu Dhabi, in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Police, announced that the goal is to implement high standards of security and safety and to promote positive behaviour, the statement said.

The transport centre confirmed that the new regulation is part of its efforts aimed at diversifying transport means and establishing an integrated and sustainable transport system. Bicycle and electric bikes are one of the first and last mile services that links public bus stations, shopping malls, services and residential areas, promotes integration in the transport network, and enables community members to reach their destinations quickly and at a very low cost, it added.

In March, new regulations were issued in Abu Dhabi for the use of bicycles, electric bikes and other micro-mobility devices in the emirate. Cyclists and users of micro-mobility devices were only permitted to use the lanes and roads intended for bicycles. Furthermore, riders were expected to wear a protective helmet, as well as reflective clothing at night, and could only park their bikes in designated areas.
