Abu Dhabi Airports, the operator of the emirate’s five commercial airports, has reported a significant 28.1 per cent increase in passenger traffic for 2024, handling 29.4 million passengers compared to 22.9 million in 2023.

The main driver of this growth was Zayed International Airport (AUH), which saw the introduction of 29 new routes, expanding its network to over 125 destinations.

The airport also welcomed eight new airlines, including British Airways, Air Astana, Aegean Airlines, and Flynas.

This surge in connectivity was reflected in a 10 per cent increase in aircraft movements, rising from 226,362 in 2023 to 249,747 in 2024.

Key markets such as the UK, India, Qatar, and Egypt contributed significantly to the demand.

Elena Sorlini, MD and CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports, expressed her satisfaction with the company’s performance, saying 2024 was a “highly successful year for Abu Dhabi Airports, marked by record-breaking passenger traffic, significant cargo growth, and the successful completion of key infrastructure projects”.

The introduction of biometric touchpoints at AUH, including check-in desks, baggage drop, and e-gates, further streamlined the passenger experience.

Abu Dhabi Airports also focused on inclusivity, achieving the ACI Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation, and introduced several initiatives such as a Sensory Space, the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Programme, and a Pet Relief Area to cater to diverse passenger needs.

In parallel, the Abu Dhabi Airports Free Zone (ADAFZ) saw substantial expansion, including the groundbreaking of a Dhs85m warehousing facility and the signing of a Musataha Agreement with Radius Group to develop Dhs320m worth of advanced warehouses.
